Purpose of Job:

•Alcorn School of Nursing tutors work one-on-one (face-to-face and online) with students on every aspect of the nursing and writing process.
•Tutors provide support service at all levels of writing competency, including help with pre-writing and brainstorming, analyzing audiences, organizing and revising rough drafts, and proofreading later drafts.
•Upon request, tutors work with professors to provide special assistance—to groups and individuals—in didactic, clinical and nursing lab skills.
•Tutors may also be asked to work regularly with students who speak English as a second language or students with special needs or circumstances.
•Tutors assist the Student Success Coach and Clinical and Virtual Lab Coordinator with administrative tasks and special projects, as needed.

Scope of Responsibilities:

•School of Nursing tutors must:
oSupport their colleagues in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of this student-centered support service.
oMaintain the confidentiality of our students and services.
oBe dependable and punctual in their duties, in the completion of assigned tasks, and in notifying the appropriate staff personnel when conflicts or problems occur.
oMust participate effectively in training sessions and staff meetings
•Tutor duties include: tutoring members of the ASU SON community; preparing written reports of each tutoring session; regularly attending the tutor practicum / staff meetings; maintaining orderliness and operation of the classrooms/labs (making appointments, checking supplies, filing, administrative tasks, flexibility in work hours to ensure adequate coverage, etc.); assisting and mentoring tutor trainees; notifying supervisor of needs or difficulties; providing input and suggestions to improve our operation; other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
•Peer Tutors are students who work collaboratively with ASU SON students to provide individual and group tutoring sessions and outreach to those wishing to enhance their study skills. Essential duties of Peer Tutors involve:
oProviding academic tutoring & writing assistance;
oTeaching study skills strategies on an individual basis;
oLeading review sessions for courses as needed;
oIntroducing students to academic support services;
oPublicizing ASU programs to residence halls and other offices on campus.
•Peer Tutors also maintain student files and check/respond to office emails and voicemails daily. Peer Tutors are expected to participate in training activities (which may involve evenings and weekends).

Essential Job Functions :

•To be considered for employment as a School of Nursing tutor, students must have demonstrated significant writing and academic ability in the school of nursing confirmed by the Program Coordinator of each program recommendations.
•School of Nursing Students must possess advanced communication skills in order to offer effective suggestions for writing improvement and have at least a 3.5 in all didactic nursing courses. Tutors must be able to work with SON students in an encouraging manner that fosters confidence in the student.
•School of Nursing tutors must:
oBe trustworthy, reliable, and detail-oriented.
oPossess a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.
oBe able to work independently and to take initiative in fulfilling responsibilities.
oCommit to reflection and growth in their practices; therefore, they take feedback seriously.

Qualifications:

Prerequisites and Requirements: An applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.5; have conducted at least three Writing Center consultations in the past academic year; and receive a recommendation from an instructor who can confirm the candidate’s significant writing ability. Qualified applicants must have successfully completed the course they are going to tutor.

•Resume: one page
•Personal statement / cover letter: one-page letter in which a candidate answers the following questions: Why do you want to work as a peer consultant (tutor) in the Alcorn School of Nursing? What do you expect to contribute to your fellow students and to the School of Nursing? What benefits do you anticipate for yourself?
