The Academic Center for Exploratory Students (ACES) at the University of Connecticut is seeking applicants for the position of Academic Advisor 1. The successful candidate will work as part of a team of advisors who provide academic advising primarily for first and second year exploratory students. The incumbent will also play a significant role in the implementation of The Major Experience (TME). The incumbent is expected to work with a dynamic team of professional advisors and administrative staff across the University, and support students in their academic and personal goals by promoting student-centered partnerships. It is also an expectation that the incumbent advances the University’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in every aspect of their work. The population advised in ACES includes a significant number of students who are undecided about their majors as well as students who are planning to apply to one of UConn’s schools or colleges.

ACES advisors provide individual advising – manage a caseload of 250-300 students, provide one-on-one advisement sessions, drop-in advisement, participate in various campus events, instruct First Year Experience courses, conduct and participate in workshops, and assist with outreach to current and prospective students, faculty, and staff. Academic Advisors also host early intervention programs for first-year students, new student orientation, and support students on academic probation. As a TME coach the incumbent will guide, mentor, and advise students on the major selection process, assist with recruiting and training peer mentors, conduct presentations in First Year Seminars, teach specialized First Year Seminars, and help facilitate a culture of exploration.


  • Serve as resource for students, faculty, parents, and others regarding academic policies and programs
  • Advise students regarding coursework and graduation requirements, policies and procedures, dismissals, and provide guidance to students with academic difficulties
  • Develop and participate in student recruitment and retention activities including the University’s admission process
  • Assist in planning, implementing, scheduling, and registration activities
  • Assist colleagues in composing and maintaining the Office’s websites, social media and other communications materials
  • Provide leadership and teaching for special programs, such The Major Exploration Program’s First Year Experience Seminar
  • Perform other related duties and special assignments as required


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and three years of position-related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support, OR advanced degree in a related field and one year of related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support
  • Ability and knowledge to support undergraduate students, including first-generation college students and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to build rapport with students, families, and university partners
  • Ability to work on occasional nights and weekends and travel occasionally for work purposes

  • Advanced degree in higher education, counseling, or related discipline
  • Advising experience in postsecondary/higher education institution(s)
  • Experience in the interpretation of academic policies, regulations, and procedures
  • Experience teaching or conducting workshops

This is a permanent full-time position. The University offers a competitive salary, outstanding benefits including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. Salary will be in the low $50's.
