The University of Maryland, Baltimore Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR)/Anesthesiology Research is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Research Manager or Laboratory Animal Research Manager. This individual will be responsible for overseeing and managing laboratory research operations of an animal research laboratory including providing administrative and technical support to the research activities. The goals of the Department of Anesthesiology Research Laboratory are to conduct federally funded state-of–the-art research projects in the areas of brain ischemia and hemorrhagic shock. This position will be filled either as a Laboratory Research Manager or a Laboratory Animal Research Manager based upon the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, and skill level.

Essential Functions:

Laboratory Research Manager: Responsible for managing the operations of single or multiple animal research laboratory and providing administrative and technical support to the research activities. This position is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation, and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities, including contributing to creation of new laboratory or expansion of an existing laboratory.

    Manage laboratory staff including training, scheduling, coordinating and delegating work, monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity. Manage the development and execution of animal project research studies which may include revising of studies in consultation with principal investigator or upper management to meet changing needs/requirements and enforce standards. Manage laboratory operations including budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies/procedures, and ordering supplies.  Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions. Perform laboratory maintenance and research activities required by the study(s).   May assemble and assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and computer graphics for publication. Provide for establishment or development of laboratory by evaluating equipment/machinery for order, planning interactions with IT systems, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures for using new equipment. Foster and support a conducive consultant/client environment, providing business unit and campus representatives with assessment, training, and advisement in research area. Perform other duties as assigned.
Laboratory Animal Research Manager: In addition to the lab research manager duties, the Laboratory Animal Research Manager, oversees animal research activities and animal clinical care in a laboratory setting with a variety of species and providing administrative and technical support to the research activities.  Work is performed in accordance with animal welfare regulations, USDA, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Services (PHS), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Association for assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines.  



Qualifications
Laboratory Research Manager: 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. 

Experience: Six (6) years of experience working in a research laboratory setting that include four (4) years in the relevant research specialization. 

Supervision: Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.

Laboratory Animal Research Manager:  

Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, biochemistry, chemistry or field of study related to the animal science. 

Experience: Six (6) years of experience working with animals in a research laboratory setting or in an animal hospital, including four (4) years in the relevant research specialization involving rodent/multi-species clinical evaluation and/or procedures.

Supervision: Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.

Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. May include working in biohazardous/select agents and/or in Biosafety Level-3 Laboratories (ABSL-3) which require successful completion of Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federal regulation.

Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts and to understand and utilize relevant scientific/medical terminology and research theory.  Writes and presents information in a clear and concise way.  Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding.  Ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects and information obtained.

Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Demonstrate pleasant and positive interactions with others to meet customer expectations and provide follow-up with customers. Ability to compromise and consensus to influence and negotiate. Remains calm and is able to manage conflict and work well with a diverse workforce. Approachable style allows others to be open in sharing thoughts and ideas. Able to make independent decisions that are a matter of significance for the unit.
