Academic Coordinator: Associate Director of Academic Skills Program Bar Specialist



The Academic Coordinator (who will have a working title of Associate Director of Academic Skills) will manage the day-to-day operations of UCI Law's bar preparation program within its Academic Skills Program (ASP Program). The main goal of the ASP Program is to develop and deliver programs to promote the academic success of students from matriculation, throughout law school, and as they prepare to enter the legal profession. This includes programming and support for students during pre-orientation, orientation, the three years of law school, and bar prep. The primary responsibility of the Associate Director of Academic Skills will be to manage ASP's development and delivery of bar programming. The Associate Director of Academic Skills will also teach an ASP course or courses as needed, and provide feedback to students on practice exams, exercises, and other writing throughout their law school career. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The Associate Director of Academic Skills will report to the Assistant Dean of Academic Skills.

The responsibilities of the Associate Director of Academic Skills will include, but are not limited to:
  • Researching and implementing the most current best practices for bar preparation
  • Collaborating with the Assistant Dean for Academic Skills, the other Associate Director of Academic Skills, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence, and the Assistant Dean for Student Services
  • Developing and teaching one or more courses in the curriculum as needed to improve student legal analysis, writing, and/or bar taking skills;
  • Providing individual academic counseling to all students and alumni preparing for the bar;
  • Tracking student preparation and performance and developing a system to monitor progress and manage communication with students/bar takers;
  • Working with the Law Registrar to gather and monitor graduating student's bar plans in all jurisdictions;
  • Working with the Chief Information Officer on collecting, analyzing, and reporting bar performance data.
  • Organizing and developing the alumni bar mentoring program;
  • Liaising with bar prep companies, planning and implementing the Bar Prep Fair, and implementing programming that enhances students' understanding and use of bar prep companies;
  • Attending and participating in faculty meetings and ASP team meetings;
  • Developing and teaching bar-exam preparation programs during the academic year and post-graduation that include individual counseling, workshops, and feedback on practice exams;
  • Serving on one or more committees as necessary that seek to advance the goals of the Law School; and
  • Collaborating with professionals within the department, within the Law School, and from other law schools across the country to research and present on topics relevant to the ASP industry.

    Requirements

    Candidates for the position must have a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and a record of academic and extracurricular success in law school, and admission to a state bar, preferably California;

    This is for a Bar Specialist position, so if the successful candidate does not have admission to the California State Bar, they must successfully pass the California bar within one year of employment;

    At least three years of relevant professional experience (preferably including teaching), with a focus on bar-exam preparation, preferably with experience in law school academic skills or similar programs; familiarity with the format and subjects tested on the California Bar Exam.

    Superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
    The ability to think imaginatively and critically about techniques to improve law students' bar-exam success, and to design, implement, and manage innovative programs to promote that development.

    The ability to handle confidential information, exhibit good judgment, and exemplify professionalism in working with students, faculty, and staff.
    The ability to initiate and forge partnerships within the law school, with the Orange County legal community, with bar prep companies and bar examiners, and nationally within the Legal Academic Skills community.

    The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse and growing population of students and promote inclusive excellence.

    The ability to juggle multiple competing priorities and meet firm deadlines.

    Nature of Appointment
    The Academic Coordinator of Academic Skills reports to the Assistant Dean for Academic Skills and works closely with the other Associate Director of Academic Skills, as well as administrators in Student Affairs/ Student Services and faculty. The position is a full-time, twelve-month academic appointment with the standard vacation and benefits package accorded to employees of the University of California. This is not a faculty appointment, and residence during the summer is expected. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
