The Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at The University of Alabama invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty positions.
Position 1: Architectural Engineering. Areas of interest include innovative building envelopes and materials; structural engineering systems; lighting and daylighting; building electrical power and distribution; building mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems; building controls; indoor environmental modeling/measurements; acoustics; fire detection/suppression; and energy efficient building design and operation. Applicants must have an earned doctorate in architectural engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related field, and at least one degree in architectural engineering.
Position 2: Construction Engineering. Areas of interest include development and application of emerging technologies (e.g., AI, automation and robotics, drone, modeling, and virtualization) for building design and construction; infrastructure construction and materials (e.g., concrete, steel, wood and composite), or construction support operations (e.g., productivity, scheduling, estimating, quality, and safety); finance and automation of constructed facilities; construction for sustainability and resiliency; and design and performance of temporary structures. Applicants with a broad background in fields such as sensors, robotics, intelligent control, data analytics, AI, and machine learning, applied to areas in the construction engineering domain are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have an earned doctorate in construction engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related field.

These positions will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct impactful research, and participate in outreach and service activities with an expectation to develop and sustain a funded research program. Both basic and applied research are valued.

The department offers ABET/EAC accredited Bachelor of Science degrees in civil engineering, construction engineering, architectural engineering, and environmental engineering. The department also offers six minors in the areas of architectural, civil, construction, environmental and water resources, transportation, and structural engineering. At the graduate level, the department offers the Masters of Science in civil engineering, the Masters of Science in environmental engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering. The department also supports two dual degree graduate programs, a joint MSCE/MBA and a joint MSCE/JD.

Established in 1831, The University of Alabama currently enrolls over 37,000 students and employs over 2,000 full and part-time faculty members in thirteen colleges and schools. The University offers an impressive array of academic programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees and a growing number of educational opportunities through distance learning technology. The College of Engineering is comprised of seven academic departments with over 6,000 students, and the College will be home to more than 150 tenure/tenure-track faculty following the current search. The College also houses nine research centers and is active in the University’s four new research institutes. The College occupies well over a half million square feet of state of the art research and instructional facilities, including the $300 million Shelby Engineering and Science Quadrangle completed in 2014 and the newly reopened $22 million renovated H.M. Comer in 2018. The Carnegie Foundation has recognized The University of Alabama with its Very High Research Activity status (formerly known as R1 status).

Successful candidates will work within an integrated research community that includes a variety of on-campus research centers such as the Alabama Transportation Institute, the Alabama Water Institute, and the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure.
