ASSISTANT UNIVERSITY COUNSEL - TAX
Duke University is seeking an experienced attorney to work primarily on tax law matters for Duke University and Duke University Health System, Inc. The position will advise departments and units across the University and Health system on a variety of tax issues, including federal tax-exempt status, non-profit corporation law, unrelated business income, endowment investment, tax-exempt bonds, executive compensation, political activities, and property tax issues. Familiarity with ERISA is preferred, as the position will oversee the provision of legal advice to the Benefits Department. Prior experience advising tax-exempt entities on tax and/or benefits issues is required; prior experience advising universities and/or academic medical centers is preferred. Position will report to Deputy General Counsel.

JD or LLB degree. Licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina or become licensed within 12 months of employment preferred.
Minimum of four (4) years of significant continuous practice experience in tax-exempt law.
Demonstrative experience and competence in tax law.
Ability to work effectively in a high-volume environment.
Personable and collaborative, with significant personal skills necessary to work in a complex decentralized environment.
Excellent communication skills and calm demeanor when counseling clients.
