Position Summary:

The Equal Opportunity/Title IX Investigator investigates complaints of harassment, sexual misconduct, and discrimination made by and against students, faculty and staff pursuant to the University’s Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct. The Investigator will assist the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in achieving its goals of providing an open, diverse and inclusive learning and working environment by conducting prompt, thorough and objective investigations of complaints, and by monitoring the University’s compliance with Title IX, Title VII and other federal and state statutes and regulatory requirements.
The primary responsibility for this position is managing the daily responsibilities associated with conducting investigations of incidents, as reported to and in close collaboration with the EOC Director, Director of Title IX Compliance, and Report and Response Coordinators. When a complaint is filed, the Investigator will conduct a prompt and thorough investigation, which includes: identifying and interviewing witnesses, gathering and securing relevant documentation, and identifying other information that would be helpful in bringing the matter to resolution. The incumbent acts as an impartial party in the investigation and provides a detailed report summarizing the findings of the investigation.
Additional responsibilities will include developing an investigative plan for complaints and incident reports, contacting all involved parties, and providing them with information about the investigative process, ensuring a well-documented investigation, analyzing information and working with the appropriate University offices in the course of investigations, maintaining accurate and thorough investigatory files and reports, providing on-going updates to the Directors, as necessary, and continuously identifying and integrating best practices in investigations.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or a related discipline is required; Master’s degree in human resources, business or a related discipline or a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school is preferred.

Qualifications and Experience:

A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in equal opportunity or human resources, student conduct, or employment/Title IX investigating including demonstrated knowledge of and the ability to interpret federal and state equal opportunity and non-discrimination laws and regulations and experience in investigating complaints, The successful candidate must have strong organizational, planning, analytical and problem solving abilities; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations with diplomacy and objectivity. Ability to work in a diverse environment and to work effectively with individuals from all levels within the organization. Must be able to work collaboratively with other University offices such as: Office of University Counsel, Office of Human Resources, and the Office of the Dean of Students.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
