Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm but flexible depending on needs of project and schedules at schools. This is an intermittent temporary position which means that some weeks will be minimal work and other weeks will require more than 20 hours.

Description of Work:

The FPG Child Development Institute is conducting a study of students participating in dual language educational settings, which is designed to investigate issues related to language of instruction, student engagement, and academic performance. Responsibilities include visiting classrooms of students in kindergarten through 3rd grade, and following prescribed protocols to conduct individualized, standardized assessments of young children’s academic skills, to observe student engagement, and to observe language practices in the classroom. Data collection activities require fluency in Spanish and English. Weekly hours will vary, with some weeks being under 20 and others requiring up to 40 hours. Work will require availability to collect data during school hours and to complete data management and general project duties during non-school hours. Employment Duration: July 28, 2021 – June 1, 2022.

Position responsibilities:
Data Collection – This function primarily includes: Collecting data (e.g., child assessments, child observations, classroom observations) at participating sites
•Training to reliability on data collection procedures and measures and maintaining reliability throughout project
•Scheduling and coordinating data collection sites and appointments
•Updating information regarding scheduling and other activities on project website
•Preparing data forms prior to site visits
•Completing all data collection forms carefully, accurately, and thoroughly
•Following detailed instructions to collect data according to evaluation protocol
•Working in a team of data collectors to ensure data collection is completed to a high degree of accuracy and in a timely manner

Data Management – This function involves:
•Scoring data, reviewing for accuracy, cleaning, and coding data after collection
•Ensuring that all data are identified and labeled correctly
•Preparing data by tracking via project website
•Entering data as needed
•Maintaining records on the status of collected data according to project protocol
•Communicating updates to project staff at FPG via email, phone conferences, and project website
•Organizing and maintaining secure temporary data storage; reviewing entered data for possible errors and verifying data entry as needed

General project duties – This function involves:
•Working with project staff regarding scheduling data collection visits, which may require sending follow-up communications by email or phone
•Maintaining confidentiality regarding data and participants
•Communicating regularly with supervisor and other FPG team members in Chapel Hill, NC via conference calls, other telephone contacts, e-mail, and project website as needed
•Hand-delivering data to FPG according to project protocol and timeline
•Completing travel reimbursement documentation accurately and submitting to FPG administrative staff weekly
•Completing additional tasks, e.g., attend additional trainings or meetings (including recruitment meetings), participating in basic project planning, as assigned by your supervisor
•Maintaining supplies of materials needed for data collection & communicating needs for additional supplies to FPG team members in a timely manner
•Provide input and/or assistance in completing reports regarding evaluation project when requested

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in early childhood, psychology, education, human development, or related fields. Experience in collecting data, preferably conducting individual child assessments, is required. Experience working with young elementary-aged children is required. Candidate must have ongoing computer access and must be able to use MS Word, Excel, email and the internet for web-based databases. Strong preference for candidates with experience in conducting child assessments using standardized measures or who have experience conducting structured classroom observations. Positions require fluency in Spanish and English. Approved DMV and school district’s background checks are requisite.

Reliable car and valid driver’s license required. Willingness to travel to nearby counties in NC. Work will require availability to collect data during school hours and complete data management and general project duties during non-school hours. Must be highly organized, detail-oriented and have excellent communication and time management skills. Special Physical and Mental Requirements:

Position requires ability to travel to and from community locations which could include walkways and stairs, sit in a chair or on the floor at child-eye level for up to one hour at a time several times each day. Stand up for periods of time, kneel and reach. Visual attention, mental concentration and manipulative skills are required during classroom observation to accurately observe the interactions between the teachers and children, take notes and score measures. Compliance with UNC and school district guidance and protocols related to COVID-19 is required.
