Department Description:

The overall organizational unit is the Marsico Lung Institute/Cystic Fibrosis Center (MLI/CF Center). The position itself is in the MLI/CF Center Animal Models Core, which is directed by Drs. Wanda O’Neal and Alessandra Livraghi-Butrico. The purpose of the MLI/CF Center Animal Models Core is to conduct research relevant the pathogenesis of pulmonary diseases characterized by airway infection, inflammation and overproduction of mucus, such as cystic fibrosis (CF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, utilizing in vivo models relevant to each particular disease. Specifically, the MLI/CF Center Animal Models Core provides to investigators in the MLI/CF Center and external collaborators services including: colony management, provision of experimental animals, execution of relevant challenge and pharmacological treatment protocols, tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage harvest, histopathology assessment, global phenotyping, and data analysis and reporting.

Position Description:

The primary purpose of the position is to assist in the 1) performance of experimental and phenotyping protocols in laboratory mice; 2) management the mouse colonies currently maintained by the MLI/CF Center Animal Models Core; and 3) generation of data reports and analyses. Scientific techniques include but are not limited to: DNA isolation and PCR to genotype and maintain mouse colonies; survival and non-survival surgeries to perform harvest of bronchoalveolar lavage, collection of tracheal and lung tissues; airway targeted instillation of bacteria, viruses, and pharmacologic treatments; gavage, sub-cute and intraperitoneal injection; monitoring of survival and health status; and good command of general laboratory procedures. A key component of this position includes data entry, record keeping, sample cataloging and archiving, and compliance with animal handling, health and safety procedures.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

The employee must be willing to work with laboratory mice and be able to work with biological safety level 2 (BSL2) infectious agents (bacterial and viral). The employee must have demonstrated abilities in rodent dissection, and effective communication skills, both written and verbal. The employee must be willing to follow established lab safety procedures, be proficient in using Excel software, and be diligent about maintaining laboratory records.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in physiology, molecular biology, genetics, or related disciplines from appropriately accredited institutions. Familiarity with data analysis software routinely used in the laboratory setting (GraphPad Prism) and the ability to query scientific literature web-based resources (PubMed).
