The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1975, is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.

The UNC Tissue Procurement Facility (TPF) provides a centralized facility for the procurement, processing, storage, analysis and distribution of malignant and non-malignant specimens for use by UNC Lineberger Cancer Center Members and sponsored non-members in basic, population, translational and clinical research studies. The mission of TPF is to support basic cancer research and clinical trials by providing high quality and trustworthy specimens by facilitating novel specimen collection, biobanking, and other biorepository services.

Position Description:

The Archival Tissue Specialist is responsible for oversight of archival tissue samples for all disease groups, including knowledge of trial-specific requirements, interactions with vendors, sample processing and shipping, and maintaining supplies. The Archival Tissue Specialist is also responsible for attending biopsies & collecting specimens.

This position will serve as the primary subject matter expert for archival tissue requesting for the TPF lab; responsibilities include furthering the development of the diagnostic tissue request program and implementing training of clinical research staff on laboratory procedures, assisting in the development, implementation, and subsequent revisions of Lineberger investigator-initiated trial laboratory manuals. These responsibilities are integral to the mission of the UNC/LCCC TPF by addressing patient safety and protocol compliance which impact research quality and safeguard institutional integrity.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with requesting, processing, and shipping laboratory samples as well as preparing study specific kits. Experience drafting technical documents.
