Organizational Unit Overview:

Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this by increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.

The Data Center is a critical support area under the direction of the Director of IT Enterprise Systems and Operations. This position is responsible for the installation and asset tracking of all physical hardware in the Data Center. The position also provides 24×7×365 monitoring and support escalation for the ECU Data Centers including Servers, Storage, Applications, Networking Campus Backbone, Intranet, and Internet services. The Data Center personnel are “the eyes and ears” for the entire infrastructure. They are ITCS’s first level for alerting, monitoring, securing, and troubleshooting our environment.

Job Duties :

This position performs technical work in the operation of computer and auxiliary equipment to meet clients’ needs and to assist users of computer systems. This position’s duties include answering calls for help as users experience difficulties with connections to the computer. Work may include installation and modification of software and hardware, testing, and documentation on a variety of platforms. Work may include interaction with customers and coworkers to troubleshoot problems related to the use of information systems. This may include work on multiple platforms. Employees troubleshoot the nature of the problem and either provide assistance or refer to the appropriate staff. Work may involve the identification of trends that develop through troubleshooting. These trends should be used for the understanding of systems interrelationships and the development of new processes to improve timeliness and service to users. The 2nd and 3rd shift positions will occasionally assist the IT manager with maintaining the Data Center’s inventory assets via the inventory system tool.

This position will work with a variety of hardware, including stand-alone servers, blades, and blade chassis, server equipment racks, electrical and HVAC equipment, fire suppression systems, and managed power supplies. Employees will be responsible for the management of hardware within the Data Center. This will involve coordinating with various support teams on the installation and configuration of all related software and hardware.

This position has been designated by the University as critical to University operations and is considered Mandatory.

Minimum Education/Experience:

High School or General Educational Development diploma and six months of experience. Equivalent coursework in computer operations or information technology from a technical school or community college may be substituted for the required experience. Journey level requires an additional 6 months of education or experience.

Employees are required to adjust their standard work schedule to meet the requirements of their position, which includes and not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation:

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Associates degree in an information technology, computer science, or a closely related field is desired. IT related certifications including Microsoft, Oracle, Network +, CISCO, and others are preferred.

Experience in the Data Center field of work including, systems administration, electrical and HVAC functional knowledge and cable maintenance/installation is desired. Experience with installing hardware, making network connections, and connecting power strips is preferred.
