We invite candidates to apply for our Academic Advisor, South Lake Campus position. The Academic Advisor provides innovative services and programs that enhance the quality of the student experience by establishing strong relationships with students as they develop and achieve their academic goals. The Advisor is responsible for delivering advising services that address the needs of all students utilizing intentional developmental advising methods focused on student success, skill development, and life-long learning. The Academic Advisor implements student success and retention programs; serves as a referral agent for students in distress; assists in data collection and continuous improvement efforts; assists with the delivery of departmental programs such as new student orientation, early-alert, retention, and intrusive advising initiatives. The Academic Advisor will provide evening advising one scheduled weeknight per week. The Academic Advisor is responsible for demonstrating LSSC’s values of learning, people, student success, forward thinking, commitment to excellence, accessibility, diversity, partnerships, and sound management practices.

 

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

 

 

  1. Utilizes intentional developmental advising methods focused on student success, skill development and life-long learning.
  2. Maintains a historic record of all individual academic advising session notes and materials.
  3. Communicates with advisees using the latest technology including Starfish and Canvas.
  4. Assists student with course selection, information related to initial transfer credit review, academic program requirements, interpretation of institutional policies and procedures and graduation audits.
  5. Provides evening advising one evening a week.
  6. Serves as referral agent for students in academic distress, which includes monitoring and record keeping via LSSC's early alert systems.
  7. Engages in outreach efforts.
  8. Communicates effectively with current and prospective students, community members and college employees, in person, by phone, in writing, and by appropriate electronic means, adhering to privacy of student records requirements (FERPA).
  9. Delivers Academic Advising presentations aimed at reinforcing student academic and career exploration for AA, AS, Certificate and Baccalaureate students.
  10. Assist with delivery of departmental advising services including new student orientation, recruitment, and intrusive advising strategies focused on at-risk populations.
  11. Participates in College retention efforts; implements student success strategies for specific target populations and or student roster group(s), monitors and responds to Starfish academic concern flags, and provides ongoing support for students on academic probation.
  12. Participates in data collection for the College's continuous improvement initiatives and accreditation compliance.
  13. Participates in the assessment of measurable learning outcomes. Contributes to department and division strategic planning and program review initiatives.
  14. Oversees the recruitment, hiring, and training process for New Student Orientation Leaders. Supervise their hours, workload, and payment processing.
  15. Serves on department and college-wide committees, councils and workgroups.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

 


Qualifications

 

EDUCATION: Required: Master's Degree in counseling, education, human services or related area from a regionally accredited institution.

EXPERIENCE: Required: Minimum three (3) years professional experience working directly with students in a regionally accredited academic setting in higher education.
 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively facilitate advising and recruitment workshops and/or presentations to both large and small audiences
  • Ability to maintain good working relations with students, faculty, staff and members of the community.
  • Demonstrate good organizational skills and leadership ability and ability to work on a variety of assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to collect, code and analyze data for assessment and evaluation purposes.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Outlook and MS Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Ability to utilize multiple computer applications to access and record student information. (LSSC uses Starfish, Canvas, Banner, Degree Works, MSOffice, and the Internet.)
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task, with attention to detail and with a high level of accuracy in a fast paced environment.
