Primary Purpose and Essential Functions:
Responsible for providing a major portion of the foundational basic science curriculum within the dental school, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, immunology, and microbiology. Although faculty members are integral in all activities of the school and participate in many areas of instruction, the teaching of anatomy occurs within discipline specific courses (a three-quarter sequence of anatomy lectures, including the lab component of the courses). The faculty member would participate primarily in the teaching of anatomy and is expected to work with the course director for the anatomy lectures. Additionally, the faculty member is expected to establish an independent research program in any area of biomedical sciences.
1. Teaching Assignments:
BMS 123. Gross Anatomy & Histology
The student will gain an understanding of functional histology and gross anatomy of the human body as appropriate for professional health care providers. Emphasis will be on the integration of anatomical knowledge at all levels and its correlation with basic clinical medicine relevant to dentistry.
BMS 133. Applied Orofacial Anatomy
The student will gain a fundamental understanding of head and neck embryology, gross anatomy, oral histology, and oral biology as is appropriate for dental healthcare providers. Emphasis will be placed on the integration of anatomical and functional histological knowledge of the orofacial complex at all levels with basic clinical dentistry and medicine. The establishment of clinical correlations with radiographic interpretation, local anesthesia administration and the overall health will be a strength of this course. Also covered are salivary glands, biochemistry of saliva, structure of hydroxyapatite, mineralization, and salivary diagnostics.
2. DDS/IDS (secondary teaching responsibility; lectures in areas of expertise).
Multidisciplinary presentation of integrated foundational knowledge related to
clinical dentistry. Topics include biomedical sciences, ethics, techniques, and information to each specific discipline of dental practice.

Specific workload and scheduling will be adjusted based on the faculty member's, as well as the department's needs. In addition to scheduled assignments, professional activities outside the school (presentations, consulting, etc.) will be supported and encouraged.
• Curriculum management in the biomedical sciences
• Modern pedagogical concepts and application in health professions education
• Trends in oral health education
• Word, Excel, Outlook, Canvas, SharePoint databases, Zoom, Teams
• Give lectures in the biomedical sciences, especially anatomy
• Minimum of two years teaching experience in a biomedical science, preferably anatomy. Residency or graduate training may be substituted for some of this two-year teaching experience.
• Successful research in a biomedical sciences, preferably related to oral health
• PhD in biomedical science or DDS/DMD from an ADA-accredited school of dentistry
• Promote the dental school mission, vision, and core values
• Communicate effectively with students and staff using various means of communication (email, Canvas site, one-on-one conversations, meetings, lectures)
• Maintain professional composure and demeanor at all times
• Model and promote behavior consistent with core values of the Dugoni School
