30-Mar-2021 Close All Job SummaryThe Embedded CUPD Victim Advocate is an exciting new position that will provide advocacy services in person for the University of Colorado's Police Department (CUPD) while also ensuring accurate and timely communication, coordination, and documentation of the interactions and referrals provided.
Central to this role is ensuring that diversity, social justice, and trauma-informed care are considered in all assessment and advocacy services provided. This unique and critical position will be embedded in CUPD and will report to the OVA Director. This role is important to supporting victims and connecting them to on-going support. While this position does not perform on-going advocacy work, they are helping first responders support victims in the moment and/or shortly after a crime.
We are looking for an experienced Victim Advocate who can practice both independently and as a team member.

Who We AreThe Office of Victim Assistance (OVA) works towards a safer, more socially just, and supportive campus community by providing culturally relevant trauma response and prevention services. Traumatic events happen every day in all communities and CU's community is not exempt. Impact can vary and OVA strives to mitigate the impact of traumatic experiences by decreasing barriers and empowering victims/survivors in making informed decisions by providing free trauma informed services. The OVA is currently staff with confidential licensed victim advocate counselors who provide on-going victim advocacy and short-term trauma informed counseling to CU students, staff and faculty.
The members of the University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) are dedicated to providing the highest quality police services in order to improve community safety, protect life and property, and reduce crime and the fear of crime. To do this, we pledge to develop a partnership with the community, to lead a community dedication to resolve problems, and to improve the quality of life for all CU affiliates. The CUPD is a full-service police agency with 46 sworn and 36 non-sworn employees providing community-based public safety services to a diverse community of 36,000 affiliates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Every year the department responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service and ensures the safety and security for all of their PAC-12 Conference athletic events with attendance at football games exceeding 50,000 fans. Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU Boulder Police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a timely and coordinated law enforcement response. What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeAdvocacy

• Respond to call-outs by CUPD to provide advocacy to victims which includes going on-scene as well as occasional phone advocacy, to meet CUPD officers and victim(s) to review Victims’ Rights and options such as medical, administrative, academic, civil, and victim compensation.
• Provide trauma-informed care and emotional support, helping empower victims to make informed decisions and supporting what the victim wants to do.
• Safety planning with victims.
• Be present when property is returned to people/families.
• Review and provide outreach on CU Police reports.
• Be a resource for OIEC (Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance) Safety and Supportive Measures team for after-hours advocacy and consults, in coordination with CUPD.
• Connect victims to OVA’s confidential victim advocate counselors for ongoing advocacy, follow up and/or counseling, as well as appropriate referrals and resources.

Administrative

• Become certified in CJIS (Criminal Justice Information System) for access to CUPD records. Record advocacy interventions.
• Co-present with OVA advocate counselors to CU Police and other community partners about services and relevant topics.
• Attend relevant trainings.

What You Should Know

• CUPD responds to all calls on campus, and sometimes off-campus, and this position will support CU Boulder community members as well as unaffiliated people who are harmed on campus and potentially off-campus.
• This position requires participation in daytime meetings with members of the OVA team as well as daytime and nighttime meetings with CUPD. This position will have some set business office hours as well as be on-call some nights and weekends. When on-call, this position also requires access to transportation and the ability to get to the Boulder campus within 60 minutes of being requested.
• This position will require a criminal background check and fingerprinting.

What We Can OfferThe salary range for this position is $45,000 - $50,000. • Bachelors'/higher educational degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, and/or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
• At least three years of experience providing victim advocacy and crisis intervention enforcement.
• Experience with a trauma-informed approach to advocacy services, including working with issues related to various crimes and trauma, including grief, sexual assault, partner abuse, stalking, experiences of bias/hate crimes, mass violence, natural disasters, and other criminal violations.

• Knowledge of victims’ rights.
• Experience working with diverse populations and proven dedication to social justice and inclusive excellence.
• Proficiency with maintaining privacy on all information, records, communications, and personnel matters. Organized and detailed oriented.

What We Would Like You To Have

• Experience and interest in working with people from multicultural backgrounds and marginalized populations.
• Experience working in a university or college setting.
• Experience in conducting advocacy in another language besides English, such as Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic.
• Knowledge of Title IX and campus misconduct policies.
• Master's degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, and/or related field.
