Girls Empowering Movement (GEM) Student Mentors will focus on the implementation and support of physical activity programming for middle school girls as a part of the GEM Program, funded by the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation. Students Mentors will serve as the site coordinator for at least one middle school in Carroll, Haralson, or Heard county. Each mentor will be trained to implement the GEM curriculum, lead physical activities chosen by the girls at their site, and serve as a point of contact for girls and parents. Mentors will also provide empathetic conversation and serve as a source of health behavior and emotional emulation.
Student Assistant II positions perform above-average duties of a complex nature requiring prior knowledge, skill, or training. Student Assistant II positions may be physically demanding and the work may be performed under difficult conditions. Students in these positions most often work with little to no supervision. This classification may be used while training for a higher level.Responsibilities Percentage Of Total Time85Responsibility / Duty
85% of daily operations for the GEM Project will take place at the Student Mentors assigned Middle School in Carroll, Haralson, and/or Heard County. Leading physical activity programming, facilitating assessment, mentoring, and supervising students.Percentage Of Total Time15Responsibility / Duty
15% of Student Mentor’s time will be spent in the lab completing training, attending team meetings, and recording data.Required Qualifications
-Currently UWG student enrolled on a full-time status
-Ability to work 5-10 hours per week, various hours of the day (before school, after school)
-Ability to complete a GEM Program training on Friday, March 26th from 9:00am – 1:00pm
-Ability to complete a GEM Leadership training on Friday, April 16th from 9:00am – 1:00pm
-Ability to attend the 2021 GEM Leadership Summit, June 25th-27th
-Outgoing and passionate about physical activity and leading middle school students
Must be a current University of West Georgia student enrolled for six credit hours and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative grade-point average unless otherwise noted/indicated by the hiring department.Preferred Qualifications
-Health and Community Wellness or Physical Education Major with a preferred UWG GPA of 2.8 or higher
-Strong written and oral communication skills

The position is located in the Wolf Wellness Lab in the UWG Coliseum. Student Mentors will travel daily to middle schools identified across Carroll, Haralson, and Heard counties, to work with students on-campus.
