The Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of sustainable structural systems. The appointment is expected to begin on January 1, 2022, or soon thereafter.
Candidates must have a PhD in civil engineering, or a related discipline by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates who have a background in structural engineering and demonstrate research excellence in ideally one or more of the following areas: wood and timber structures, hybrid steel or concrete - timber structures. Additionally, relevant experience in one or more of the following areas is required: large-scale structural testing, advanced numerical modelling, building code development.
Applicants must indicate how their expertise would complement and existing research and teaching in the Structural Engineering group and extend the impact of the Department. The successful applicant must complement and strengthen the overall capacity for research and teaching of several current faculty members in the Department. Candidates must have an undergraduate degree in engineering and be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer.
The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive and externally funded research program. The candidate will also be involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and departmental service.
The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in research as evidenced primarily by a record of and quality of published papers in top-ranked and field relevant journals, or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, the submitted research statement, participation in top conferences, presenting research at other prominent venues and strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
Excellence in teaching may be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier including a strong statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi and excellent teaching evaluations or demonstrated superior performance in other teaching related activities, including performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, or experience leading successful workshops or seminars as well as strong endorsements from referees. Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering is home to the Structural Testing Facility. This facility ranks among the best equipped testing facilities in North America and has received numerous awards for the quality of research performed. It offers exceptional capabilities for large-scale experimental and hybrid experimental-numerical testing. The main laboratory facility is complemented by numerous ancillary facilities such as a woodworking area, concrete mixing laboratory, machine shop and welding bay. An $8M upgrade was completed in 2009 with funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund.
