Description:

Reporting to the Director, Building Operations, the Senior Manager, Caretaking and Waste Management is responsible for providing timely and, efficient services in Caretaking and Waste Management/Recycling on the Mississauga Campus of the University of Toronto.

Through managing and providing strong leadership to three Managerial direct reports, the Senior Manager oversees Caretaking Operations which includes day, afternoon and evening shifts Monday to Friday and Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon shifts, in a 7 days per week operation. The Senior Manager is also responsible for the development and overall management of a Waste Management program at UTM.

The Senior Manager is responsible for ensuring the provision of a consistent level of service, building staff morale for a diverse group of staff; hiring and training of new staff with varied levels of experience; managing employee performance and ensuring ongoing consistency of cleanliness, and special cleaning protocols required, are met; ensuring adherence to the collective agreement and best management practices; developing and overseeing the implementation of work schedules; coordinating set-ups, equipment purchases, repairs, and related activities with subordinate Managers; ensuring health and safety standards are maintained; ensuring that all equipment is in good repair and scheduling replacement purchases as required; responding to community needs and customer concerns, ensuring contract obligations are met with respect to service agreement and assisting the Director, Building Operations with departmental budgets, procurement, identifying long-term staffing and other needs necessary to meet the demand for services on an expanding campus.

Qualifications Required

Education:

College diploma or University degree in a relevant field. Completion of a Facilities Management Certificate or actively engaged in completing the Facilities Management Certificate Program or an equivalent combination of education and experience. BOMA (Building Owners and Managers' Association) designation an asset.

Experience:

A minimum of 5 years’ management experience preferably in a post-secondary or large service oriented environment. Experience must demonstrate a progression from supervisory to management role. Must have demonstrated experience managing a large workforce in a unionized environment; experience applying Collective Agreements and sound knowledge of hazardous chemicals, WHMIS regulations and the Ontario Health & Safety Act and managing budgets.

Skills:

Must have excellent organizational skills, including planning of work schedules; the ability to work effectively under pressure of multiple demands, strict deadlines and frequently changing priorities; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated effective leadership skills; the ability to develop, motivate and support staff and build collaboration and teamwork; ability to initiate and implement operational changes effectively; excellent problem-solving skills; strong conflict resolution skills and effective customer service skills. Must be proficient using programs in Microsoft Office suite.
