Developing Our Clinical Skills (DOCS) - Associate Director for Preceptorship Position Description

The Developing Our Clinical Skills (DOCS) Curriculum Associate Director for Preceptorship serves as the faculty coordinator for the preceptorship curriculum for the University of Colorado School of Medicine (SOM).  Reporting to the Director of DOCS, this 20% position (0.2 FTE Support plus benefits) is responsible for the following areas:

  • Develop and administer the preceptorship curriculum for all pre-clerkship medical students
  • Recruit preceptors from sites along the Front Range, including University of Colorado based practice, private and affiliate-based primary care practices, community clinics, and large HMO organizations to ensure clinical placement for all first-year students so they can meet programmatic requirements
  • Participate in preceptor clinical site visits for recruitment, preceptor engagement, and faculty development
  • Develop preceptor resources and direct preceptor faculty development activities
  • Match first year medical students with preceptors based on preceptor availability and student schedule
  • Communicate regularly with students and preceptors regarding curriculum, expectations, requirements, and evaluations. This includes the preceptor orientation sessions and related required trainings (HIPAA, OSHA, etc.)
  • Serve as a contact for students throughout the academic year to encourage their success in the preceptorship curriculum, including problem-solving, re-assignment if necessary, and regular check-ins
  • Serve as a contact for preceptors regarding student attendance, progress, behavior, curriculum expectations, and evaluations
  • Incorporate student feedback and evaluation results into preceptorship curriculum development
  • Ensure preceptorship curriculum results in application of clinical skills to promote competency development needed for progression into Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship
  • Advance student assessment and preceptorship evaluation methods. Oversee the use of the on-line evaluation system for preceptorship related content
  • Ensure alignment of learning objectives and experiences with the Ft. Collins branch campus
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Life to ensure clinical requirements for learners related to preceptorship are met
  • Collaborate with EHR teams at main affiliates to ensure learners receive necessary access and training for their preceptorship activities
  • Manage and monitor logging/preceptor evaluation process
  • Recommend grades to the Course Director based upon students’ completion of required elements
  • Other duties as specified by the Director of DOCS
  • Develop and administer a preceptorship elective experience for post-clerkship students
  • Work with the Office of Community-Based Medical Education (OCBME) and SOM Departments to support preceptor needs through resources, benefits, outreach, faculty development and education, and clinical faculty appointments
  • Work with the SOM Office of Student Life, Office of Information Technology, Office of Assessment, Evaluation, & Outcomes, and other offices/departments as they relate to preceptorship experiences. This includes collaboration in the development of a preceptor database within the new SOM educational platforms.
  • Participate in ongoing DOCS curricular development and integration with preceptorship
  • Attend DOCS faculty meetings & participate in additional activities to support the success of the DOCS curriculum
  • Ensure timely responses to emails and phone calls from preceptors, students, and curriculum staff
  • Collaborate with the Curriculum Manager to supervise the Preceptorship Coordinator. Meet regularly with Preceptorship Coordinator to ensure task completion and accurate tracking practices to ensure the success of the preceptorship program
  • Lead continuous quality improvement of the preceptorship program
  • Design, organize, and produce the annual Golden Stethoscope banquet and associated activities to honor and recognize preceptors
  • In addition to the Director of DOCS, the DOCS team includes 4 Associate Directors and administrative support personnel. The Associate Director in the Preceptorships role will interact frequently with the Director and the other Associate Directors to help develop and assess the overall DOCS curriculum. All DOCS Associate Directors report to the Director of DOCS.

    Salary and Benefits:

    The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $30,000 to $40,000.

    The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • A faculty appointment in the CU School of Medicine is required
    • MD or DO degree.
    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience teaching medical students is preferred, as is experience in clinical medicine.
    • Experience with and knowledge of medical education at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is also preferred. 
    • Preferred start date: negotiable, but by June 1, 2021.

    • The successful individual in this position must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and value working within a team.
    • Organizational skills and attention to detail are important. 
    • The individual in this position needs to be a person who can cultivate relationships with both university and community physicians and be available to answer questions and problem solve as needed.
    • This person must also cultivate sustainable relationships with other faculty in the school of medicine and work to ensure the DOCS Curriculum is well represented within the school. 
    • The individual must enjoy working with students, helping them with any preceptor issues, providing advice on how to troubleshoot/resolve issues, and assisting students to ensure their success.
