Sarah Lawrence College in partnership with the Hudson River Museum invites applications for a Public Humanities Fellow starting in August 2021. This three-year, full-time fellowship is funded by a grant from the Andrew W. The position will enhance the interpretive work at the Hudson River Museum and also extend curricular and pedagogical innovation for the college.
At the Museum, the Mellon Fellow will pursue related curatorial and educational projects, mentored by senior leadership and integrated with the entire staff. He/She/They will engage in outreach, research, writing, and programming, resulting in a range of content that is accessible and relatable to the public across a variety of platforms, inviting new generations to participate in creating and sharing vital cultural materials. Genuine interest in helping the public feel welcome and a desire to demystify the museum experience are a must.
The Mellon Fellow will share our commitment to engage, inspire, and connect diverse communities through the power of the arts, sciences, and history. He/She/They will lead an initiative to develop the Museum’s collections reflecting people’s lives in Yonkers, reaching out to the community to gather images, objects, and media from those whose representation or histories have been historically underrepresented in the Museum’s collections and narratives. This project will build upon the HRM’s successful Through Our Eyes: Milestones and Memories of African Americans collection project to reach populations including, but not limited to, the Latino/a/x and LGBTQ communities—recognizing the intersectionality that exists—and integrating these objects into the Museum’s collection displays, interpretation, and programming for the public and for schools. This process will intentionally build stronger, and sustainable, relationships with these communities.
This work will be essential to the development and implementation of collections galleries that integrate new and existing collections reflecting the rich diversity of Yonkers, Westchester, and the surrounding region, while also highlighting the Museum’s significant American art collection. Input from the Public Humanities Fellow on creative ways to combine all these assets for innovative, relatable, and effective storytelling, integrating interpretive elements that reflect the spirit and criteria of the collecting initiative, will be a key element of the success of this major effort, set to open in summer 2022.
At the College, the Public Humanities Fellow will teach courses that build on the work at the Museum. While the Fellow’s area of specialty is open, we envision courses based in art history and curatorial studies that will introduce our undergraduates to curatorial practice and focused topics in modern and contemporary art, and engage them in current conversations around historically marginalized voices and perspectives, as well as the ways that museums establish and maintain interrelationships with local communities.
We invite interested candidates to submit a statement of interest and possible directions in which they might take the Fellowship along with a CV, three letters of recommendation, relevant evidence of teaching (such as syllabi or a statement of teaching philosophy), and a sample of their work either in print or in a multi-media format.
The successful candidate will combine a Ph.D. or equivalent professional accomplishment in a relevant field with experience in community engagement. He/She/They will have formal education in art history, museum studies, and/or education, with an understanding of learning theory, and sensitivity to the learning needs and styles of widely diverse audiences, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. Familiarity working with databases, especially TMS (used for the Museum’s collections), is desirable, as is proficiency in a foreign language, preferably Spanish.EEO Statement:
