Director of Government Relations

Position Summary:

Reporting strategically to the president and operationally to the chief of staff of the university’s chief operating officer, the director of government relations leads the institution’s federal and state government relations efforts, advising and partnering with the president and other campus leadership on matters of political significance. The director builds and maintains bipartisan relationships with relevant state and federal legislative and executive branch offices to facilitate effective communication and advocacy. Additionally, the director coordinates with colleagues from other institutions and national higher education organizations to establish mutual priorities and accomplish mutual goals. The director tracks and researches policy and budgetary issues and leads the institution’s advocacy in support of its objectives and priorities.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate should demonstrate:
•Minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required with a degree in public policy, political science, public relations or related field being preferred
•Adeptness with state and federal legislative and budgetary processes with at least seven years of experience within Virginia state government, federal government or government relations
•Expertise working with executive-level leadership and interacting with legislators and other senior government stakeholders
•Skill working cross-functionally and with a broad range of constituencies
•The ability to research policy issues and communicate their importance effectively in writing and orally
•Excellent presentation development and delivery skills
•The ability to work independently and manage a dynamic workload
•Mastery of interpersonal skills and sound judgement
•Knowledge of higher education and related policy areas
•Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required

Preferred Qualifications:

•Deep knowledge of Virginia’s political constructs and processes
•Background with higher education structures and protocol
•Experience leading a government relations function
•Advanced degree in a related field

Conditions of Employment::

This position will include some work on evenings and weekends, especially during Virginia’s General Assembly Session. The position will also require travel, frequently to Richmond, periodically to DC, and occasionally to other locations.

Must have a current driver’s license.
