Stanford University is seeking a highly motivated research technician to join our team. In this role, you, the Research Assistant will play a critical role in advancing a highly innovative research program focused on platelet glycobiology. You will work directly with Dr. Marie Hollenhorst, a physician-scientist in the laboratory of Professor Carolyn Bertozzi at Stanford ChEM-H. The goal of Dr. Hollenhorst’s research is to understand how changes in the sugar molecules attached to the surface of platelets affect their function and clearance from the bloodstream. This work draws on the depth of chemical glycoscience expertise in the Bertozzi lab, and answers questions that are directly relevant to clinical management of patients with hematologic illnesses. This is a 1-year fixed-term position with the possibility to extend based on project funding. In this position you:- Will be responsible for learning new experimental procedures, and executing these first under guidance from Dr. Hollenhorst and eventually independently.
- Will be responsible for providing general lab support, including such tasks as preparing buffers, ordering reagents, shipping and receiving packages.
- Should have training in wet lab techniques and strong organizational skills.
- Will be responsible for recruitment and consent of research participants and maintenance of human subjects protocol records.
- Are a self-starter, comfortable with autonomy, and embrace opportunities to tackle new problems and challenges as part of a dynamic team.
- Will be working closely with scientists and staff in the Bertozzi lab.
- Review literature in glycobiology and platelet biology on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
- Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
- Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.
- Work in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.
- Work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
- Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
- Must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.
- May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.
- Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related scientific or healthcare field.
- General understanding of scientific principles.
- Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve.
- Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
- General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master scientific applications.
- Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Knowledge and experience with basic and/or translational biomedical research.
