The Syphilis & Emerging sexually transmitted infections (STIs) Team, Laboratory Reference & Research Branch, Division of STD Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has three internship positions are available for two undergraduate and one graduate students.
Interns will carry out research projects under the direction of senior scientists. The research focuses on conducting molecular surveillance of Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of the common sexually transmitted disease syphilis; evaluation & development of molecular and serologic assays for syphilis diagnosis. The successful candidates will gain practical experience in state-of-the-art serological and molecular biological techniques and will gain hands-on experience in handling chemicals and biological reagents, operating laboratory equipment, generating and analyzing scientific data.
- Practice basic laboratory safety and sterilization procedures.
- Review and research project.
- Design and conduct experiments.
- Collect and interpret data.
- Present project progress in team and branch meetings and possible manuscript writing.
- Participate in lab duties.
• Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited college or university.
• Pursuing a BS or MS degree in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, or other Biological Sciences.
• Completed Sophomore year.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7.
• Laboratory experience preferred, but not required.
• Required Time Commitment: 20- 24 hours per week for one year or at least two semesters.
• Opportunity to learn the process of science and apply knowledge gained in classes.
• Gain laboratory research and presentation experiences.
• Opportunity to earn up to 3 college credit hours per semester based on the policy of each school.
