The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) brings together more than four decades of innovative and life-saving research on vaccines and infectious diseases.  http://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/cvd/ As an organized research center within the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), CVD comprises a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff whose primary mission is to develop, evaluate, and implement vaccines and other interventions to reduce illness and mortality domestically and in less developed countries.   We work to prevent and treat enteric and respiratory diseases, to reduce the threat of malaria and antimicrobial resistance, and to identify, understand and combat other tropic and emerging pathogens burdening low resource settings. Training is a critical component of our work to ensure the foundation for the next generation of scientists and researchers committed to our mission.
The CVD is seeking a Senior Financial & Budget Analyst to join our team.
Occasional international travel is required.

Primary Duties:

  • Develop and maintain simple and complex spreadsheets in order to analyze financial data and prepare accurate and timely financial reports.
  • Download, compile, categorize, and manipulate the University's financial data using quantitative models and formulas.
  • Prepare and distribute accurate, concise, well-organized and timely financial reports, presentations and financial information which may include financial charts, forecasting, and/or budget vs. actual variance analysis.
  • Work within tight deadlines to analyze budget and financial data and report basic budget and financial forecasts for areas such as salaries, fringe benefits, indirect cost recoveries, state funds, revolving funds, grants and contracts, fund balances, and other areas as needed.
  • Review and analyze all University assigned financial accounts and expenditures to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies in order to make accurate year-end revenue, expense, and surplus/deficit projections. Assist in preparing recommendations.
  • Assist in preparation of future budget based upon historical data and trends.
  • Maintain and manage budget archive and financial data files that can be quickly accessed and manipulated to generate needed financial information.
  • Prepare responses and communication to various internal and external agencies.
  • Participate in special projects. Identify, recommend, and implement workflow process improvements.
  • Identify data or information about a particular issue, discuss anomalies or discrepancies that are observed, and assist with the preparation of various internal or external financial data requests.
  • Participate in the discussion, development and implementation of new university financial processes and procedures.
  • Assist in development and implementation of financial and budget training programs as needed.
  • May provide work coordination and training to less experienced staff.
  • Travel to international field site to provide guidance in the area of finance and budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or business related field. Master's degree preferred. Experience: Five (5) years of experience in financial analysis, management accounting, budgeting, auditing, data management, or data analysis with two (2) years of experience in financial analysis, management accounting, budgeting or auditing. Certification/Licensure: Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Financial Manager (CFM), or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) preferred. Other: Prior experience with research or sponsored programs in an educational environment is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.  Ability to travel internationally as needed.
