Advertised Job Summary:

This position involves the development, coordination, and delivery of training for DSS child welfare and legal staff. It has two primary areas of responsibility: (1) Serves as one of the primary trainers for initial legal training for new DSS caseworkers, and (2) In conjunction with the DSS Office of General Counsel, plans and coordinates continuing legal education programs for attorneys and training for paralegals.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions):

Law degree, membership in the S.C. Bar, and 3 years of relevant experience, including experience as an attorney in child protection proceedings.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strongly prefer experience in developing curricula and conducting training programs. Prefer familiarity with virtual platforms and use of technology to enhance training. Prefer obtainment of child law concentration in conjunction with law degree or coursework in children’s law. Experience representing various parties in child protection proceedings (DSS, GAL, parents) would be a plus.


Substantial knowledge of federal and state child protection statutes, related case law, court rules, and practices. Familiar with DSS programs and procedures. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, in both oral and written communications. Excellent research and writing skills, along with capacity for critical thinking. Ability to develop and adapt curriculum, adjusting to different learning styles and using a variety of learning activities. Ability to work independently and be self-motivated, while also having proven ability to be a productive and collaborative team member.
