IT Administrator III, HPC Security Administrator

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking qualified applicants for a HPC Security Administrator position which will provide a key role in evaluating, deploying, maintaining, securing, and operating the security posture of the research cyberinfrastructure resources used to support the research mission of the University. The OIT High Performance & Scientific Computing (HPSC) group operates computing resources and provides support to University researchers and their collaborators giving them the capability to investigate and solve cutting-edge and computationally challenging problems.  Reporting to the Director, High Performance and Scientific Computing, this individual will be part of an effective team that manages centralized high-performance computing and storage resources, a secure research computing environment, and works with faculty and researchers to make effective use of the resources for research following regulatory compliance and established University and OIT policies, procedures, and standards.  

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have knowledge of and experience with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800 series publications, security tools, security techniques, effective security related policies and procedures, and best practices in Linux system administration for securing the research cyberinfrastructure. Responsibilities include: support and maintain an effective security posture of the HPSC services and resources; perform 
system administration, system programming, configuration management, and quality assurance and testing of the HPSC environment; create, update, and maintain OIT HPSC services security plans, policies, procedures, and standards; perform and document all HPSC service security impact analysis; have awareness of security alerts, advisories and directives and lead and perform flaw remediation; perform recurring and ad hoc security assessments to evaluate the security posture of the HPSC services and resources; maintain an effective vulnerability scanning process and audit system review, analysis, and reporting capability; maintain the boundary protection controls for the HPSC services and resources; and work with other OIT groups, such as, Networking Services, Help Desk, and Systems to support the continual, efficient, and effective operation and security posture of the research cyberinfrastructure.

Required Qualifications:

    •    U. S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a green card.
    •    A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or other related scientific and/or engineering discipline 
    •    Three years performing security administrator and/or Linux system administrator role in a university research or commercial environment
    •    Three years of experience with Red Hat or CentOS 7 or higher Linux
    •    Knowledge of security administrator role, duties, and activities
    •    Knowledge of security tools, security technologies, and security best practices in university research and/or commercial environment 
    •    In-depth knowledge of Red Hat Linux 7, CentOS 7 Linux or higher
    •    Knowledge of NIST 800-53, 800-171 and other NIST 800 series special publications and their application
    •    Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
    •    Ability to work independently and as a member of a team and to prioritize assignments with minimal supervision

Desired Qualifications:
    •    Security professional certification (ISC2 CISSP, GIAC, etc.) preferred
    •    Advanced degree in Computer Science or other related scientific and/or engineering discipline is preferred  
    •    Knowledge of and ability to perform recurring and ad hoc security assessments
    •    Knowledge of performing security impact analysis
    •    In-depth knowledge of script writing in Perl, Python, and/or bash
    •    Knowledge of LogRhythm SIEM system
    •    Knowledge of icinga monitoring system
    •    Experience with Tenable vulnerability scanning system
    •    Experience with developing and maintaining security plans for a computational resources, services, and/or projects
    •    Experience with installation, configuration, use, and maintenance of a configuration management system, such as, ansible or puppet
    •    Experience with the use of Microsoft productivity tools, such as, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint
