Princeton University

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University seeks outstanding candidates for one or more postdoctoral research associate or more senior research position investigating the geochemistry of mineral-water systems. Successful candidate(s) will take the lead in applying molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the fundamental properties of adsorbed or clay interlayer water films in soils and sedimentary rocks. Possible topics include the couplings between aqueous chemistry and disjoining pressure; the dynamics of water in thin films; the aggregation of clay particles and its impact on the rheology of clayey media; the adsorption of organic compounds on mineral surfaces; and the mechanics of three-phase systems including clay, water, and non-wetting fluids (e.g., CO2). Candidates must be interested in working collaboratively with other research staff and graduate students within the team and, also, in working with experimentalists to take advantage of the synergies between atomistic simulations and experimental techniques. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field, experience in atomistic simulations and/or clay mineral surface geochemistry, good interpersonal skills, and advanced proficiency in communicating scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and at professional meetings. Desirable qualifications include experience in programming and in experimental investigations of the nano-geochemistry and microstructure of fine-grained media. Initial term of appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and funding. Applications must be submitted by February 15, 2021, 11:59 pm EST. The start date is anticipated to be between March and September 2021. Interested applicants must submit an application online at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/19141. Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vita and list of publications, a statement of research experience and interests, and contact information (address, email, and telephone) of three referees. Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. This position is subject to the University's background check policy.
