General Summary:

The Facilitator/Community Organizer will provide coordination and support to the Riders Transportation Access Group (RTAG), whose responsibility it is to advise the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) on transportation matters impacting seniors and/or persons with disabilities. The goal of the group is to ensure that all people with disabilities and seniors have every opportunity to be fully participating members of the transportation community; noting that fundamental to this opportunity is the right and ability to use public transportation in an equal, effective and dignified manner.

Examples of Duties:

  • Promote efforts to strengthen, grow, and diversify the RTAG membership, working to recruit, engage, and provide support to members of RTAG. This will include 1:1 meetings with existing and potential members, outreach to community organizations, and the creation and execution of member leadership development plans.
  • Provide outreach to community organizations throughout the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) service area to help foster community engagement in various ways, including attendance of relevant community meetings and/or events in order to increase the Rider’s Transportation Access Group’s (RTAG) visibility to the disability and senior communities;
  • Facilitate strategic planning and consensus building with RTAG executive board in response to emerging and ongoing relevant transit policy issues.
  • Liaise with the MBTA and the RTAG to facilitate collaboration between the MBTA and the group with the specific goal of completing the goals and objectives of the group’s work plan;
  • Compile annual work plan and track its progress with the MBTA and the group; communicate with both the executive board members and the MBTA to identify both parties’ goals and objectives for the group; work with both parties to draft a work plan for the upcoming year and update as necessary;
  • Organize all business of the RTAG, including but not limited to scheduling all meetings, assisting with any ad-hoc committee recruitment, distributing agendas, notices and meeting minutes, working with the executive board to schedule any necessary presentations and answering community questions; responsible for ensuring that any follow-up items are completed in a timely fashion;
  • Draft internal and external communications to fulfill the goals and objectives of the group, as well as to foster and maintain relationships with members of the disability and senior communities as a whole;
  • Assist with facilitation of any public meetings and/or ad-hoc meetings between the group, the MBTA and other community members as deemed necessary; assist with setting up presentations and ensure compliance with public meeting law; arrange for reasonable accommodations for meetings with the Institute for Community Inclusion or the MBTA depending on the venue used for the meeting and the specific surrounding circumstances;
  • Maintain all membership contact information and attendance records of RTAG members, as well as the MBTA staff attendance records and executive board members who attend public meetings;
  • Provide follow-up with membership on any outstanding requests for information or specific questions about MBTA services or the committee’s goals or objectives and their potential involvement with the committee; responsible for coordinating with appropriate parties to respond to the requests;
  • Responsible for maintaining the website and social media presence of RTAG; publicize information drafted by the executive board and/or draft information based on guidance from the executive board; update content depending on the needs of the executive board and the MBTA;
  • Serve as liaison for all public communications, including assisting with content for the group’s online presence, drafting notices, agendas, reports, etc.;
  • Conduct accessibility research on best practices or industry standards, as requested;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of one-three years of administrative, organizing, or other relevant professional experience, preferably in an academic, public, or non-profit setting, required. An additional four years of the above work experience can be substituted for the required Bachelor’s Degree.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act preferred.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of community organizing practices, including outreach methods, leadership development, and strategic planning;
  • Ability to move diverse individuals and groups to take action to advance their vision and values;
  • Ability to facilitate meetings, both virtually and in person, that ensure a broad range of experiences are honored while moving a group to consensus;
  • Knowledge of software applications, including office software and database management;
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn basic web editing;
  • Ability to maintain accurate records;
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others and to deal effectively with others;
  • Ability to research and navigate the internet and social media;
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information;
  • Ability to be flexible and to shift priorities as needed;
