Position Summary:

The full-time, live on site, caretaker (staff assistant, SL2) monitors and maintains facilities of the William H Parks Family Center for Environmental and Outdoor Education at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks including operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment systems, and the maintenance of all facilities (i.e., buildings, grounds, roads and trail systems).

The William H. Parks Family Center for Environmental and Outdoor Education promotes campus-wide awareness and commitment to environmental outdoor education while also managing the College’s outdoor/environmental facilities.

Major Responsibilities:

• Monitor and maintain the safety and security of facilities and occupants located at the Outdoor Education Center.
• Assume responsibility as directed for the Center’s operation in the absence of the director and assistant director. Completes or assists with scheduled operational and maintenance tasks as needed.
• Maintain* a NYS DEC Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification (certificate grade 1A). Maintain daily records, analysis and testing of the wastewater treatment plant. Assist the water treatment plant operator with the operation of the water treatment plant including records and daily analysis in their absence. *Must obtain DEC Wastewater Treatment Plan Operator Certification (1A) within one year of appointment.
• Prepare all buildings, grounds and instructional areas for each scheduled group at the Center, including cleaning, sanitation, supplies and trash removal.
• Monitor and maintain all dormitories, classrooms and dining areas for safe operation. This includes inspection of electrical, fire, heating and plumbing.
• Inventory and stock all janitorial supplies.
• Assist in the transportation of all groups and gear as required.
• Assist with the maintenance of summer and winter roads and trails for safe travels.
• Collaborate with the director to develop work schedules and complete maintenance projects for the Center.
• Patrol Center property, including boundary lines and posted signs, Kirby Camp, Camp Marion, and Silver Beach to provide safety and security.
• Complete routine assignments such as: mowing lawns, painting and building repairs, repair and storage of seasonal equipment, planting and maintaining flower beds and pots.
• Cut, buck and stack firewood. Replenish wood supplies and kindling in buildings and outdoor fire sites as needed.
• Clean sewage lines in spring and fall.
• Make seasonal adjustments to buildings including windows and doors.
• Clean, paint, and shovel roofs as necessary.
• Plow, pack and sand pathways in winter as needed. Shovel porches and entryways to all buildings.
• Remove leaves and debris, clear trails and roads, remove dangerous trees and limbs, condition lawns seasonally.
• Mop and wax floors as needed. Knox, Spruce, and His/Hers floors are to be sanded and painted every other year unless otherwise directed.
• Assesses buildings for cleanliness, items left, trash and general condition after group departures. Checks bathrooms, toilets, lights, temperature settings and heating systems. Reports any abuse or damage to director immediately.

Job Requirements:
• Knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in cleaning and maintenance of recreation and research facilities and grounds; the operation and use of janitorial equipment necessary to complete work assignments; the occupational hazards and safety precautions used in cleaning, grounds and maintenance work.
• Ability to make minor repairs to buildings and equipment; operating power mowing and trimming equipment; perform minor preventative maintenance on cleaning equipment; assist skilled trades workers in performing minor repairs; use power snow removal equipment; read and understand instructions on janitorial supply containers; request supplies necessary for work performance; understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Skills specific to basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, masonry and painting. Problem solving skills and ability to take initiative, make sound judgements, and use creativity to provide innovative solutions.
• Communication and interpersonal skills including social perceptiveness and a service orientation to work well with other staff, faculty, administration, students, program participants, alumni and other visitors regardless of social or cultural identity, background, ability or lived experiences.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

• Reports to the director.
• Reports to the assistant director in the director’s absence.
• Works closely with a staff associate, mechanic

Required Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Seven years’ experience in facility operation and maintenance
• Current Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification (1A) or ability and commitment to obtain a NYS DEC Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification (1A) within one year of appointment.
• Current NYS Boating Safety Certificate or ability and commitment to pass a NYS Boating Safety Course within four months of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
• Current Wastewater Treatment Plan Operator Certification
• Experience with wastewater treatment plant operation
• More than seven years’ experience in facility operation and maintenance
• Current Boating Safety Certificate
