Job description

Senior Manager, Alumni Volunteer Leadership

Stanford University

Job Number:
88983

Stanford University is one of the world's premier academic and research institutions, devoting tremendous intellectual and physical resources toward the betterment of humanity. As a major Bay Area employer, Stanford seeks people committed to excellence and to improving our world. In turn, the university is committed to supporting its employees as they develop their careers and enrich their lives. We believe Stanford's future success will be shaped by the diverse perspectives, unique experiences, and inclusive culture of its community.

Founded in 1892 by the first graduating class, the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) has a mission to reach, serve and engage all Stanford alumni and students; to foster a lifelong intellectual and emotional connection between the university and its graduates; and to provide the university with goodwill and support. SAA believes that diversity and excellence go hand-in-hand and so hires individuals with a commitment to working effectively with colleagues and alumni from diverse backgrounds.

Position Summary:

The Senior Manager, Alumni Volunteer Leadership is dedicated to identifying future alumni volunteer leaders for Stanford. This work is vital to the University's long-term success since it will create and nurture a pipeline of diverse talent to fill alumni leadership roles at the highest levels, and in doing so, reflect the diversity of our alumni body and campus community.

The Senior Manager will develop and execute a strategic plan for this effort, including the development of a systematic process to identify potential alumni leaders who will serve the university in the years to come. Special attention and effort will be made to increase the diversity of Stanford's alumni leadership pool and to expand the representation of diverse alumni (including Stanford's alumni of color and the LGBTQ+, First Gen and/or Low Income, and female alumni communities) in alumni leadership positions.

This position is part of the Alumni Volunteer Engagement (AVE) team within the Stanford Alumni Association. AVE's mission is to engage alumni more fully in the life of the University through volunteer participation. The department helps link alumni to meaningful volunteer opportunities at Stanford, develop alumni leadership including cultivating and encouraging diversity broadly defined, and recognize and honor alumni volunteers on behalf of Stanford. This position will work closely with the Diversity & Inclusion teams at SAA, Office of Development, and schools and units.

Remote work possible for the right candidate.

In this role you will:

Work in partnership with university staff and high-level volunteers to identify diverse and viable candidates for leadership roles. Find and tap resources for identifying high-level volunteer capabilities and potential, including reviewing alumni lists, newspaper articles, and directories of professional affiliations, as well as researching the backgrounds of individual candidates. Refine talent database and develop a process for regularly reviewing potential alumni leaders, and monitor the efficacy of this process.

Strategic/Long-term Planning:

Create a strategy document that outlines a plan, key stakeholders, a timeline, and success metrics with a focus on increasing diversity in alumni volunteer representation across the university. Deliver annual status reports on the progress of this effort.

Serve as a Leadership Resource:

Work with senior staff from Alumni Relations, Office of Development and university departments to develop a leadership “career path” for volunteers at Stanford, and to advise on potential members for their committees, boards, and councils. Maintain frequent contact with members of Stanford's Board of Trustees, the Alumni Committee on Trustee Nominations, the Stanford Alumni Association's Board of Directors, and the Stanford Associates Board of Governors.

Support SAA's Diversity & Inclusion Efforts:

Serve as a close strategic partner to the SAA and OOD Diversity and Inclusion teams, including but not limited to recruiting hosts, developing invitation lists and serving as staff support for networking/listening sessions with diverse alumni leaders and members of underrepresented communities. Help source speakers and volunteers for the Summit alumni conferences planned by the national diverse alumni clubs. Serve as a key liaison and point of contact for potential alumni volunteers and the university.
