VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH

The Department of English at Bridgewater College invites applications for a new full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of English with expertise in composition and cultural rhetorics starting August 2021. Non-tenure track. Responsibilities for the position include teaching and developing composition and upper-level writing courses, including courses in editing, publishing, and writing for various professions, such as writing for business or writing for the sciences. We encourage candidates whose research, teaching, and/or service reflects commitments to the intersection of cultural rhetorics and professional writing practices. The Department of English offers two majors (English and Professional Writing) and three minors (English, Professional Writing, and American Studies). Departmental faculty emphasize creativity and innovation in pedagogy and research, and are committed to advising and mentoring students, contributing to campus-wide initiatives, and maintaining an active research agenda.

QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified applicants will hold a Ph.D. (ABD considered) in Rhetoric and Composition, English, or a related field. We seek applicants with strong evidence of successful teaching (particularly of diverse student populations), demonstrated commitment to collegiality and service, and a promising research agenda.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Bridgewater College was founded in 1880 as the first coeducational college in Virginia. Bridgewater offers bachelor’s degrees in approximately 60 majors and minors, along with four graduate programs, pre-professional programs such as medicine and law, and teacher licensure. The College is a member of NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, with 23 intercollegiate athletic teams. The vibrant residential campus is located in the town of Bridgewater, Virginia, near the city of Harrisonburg in the center of the Shenandoah Valley. An excellent school system, healthy business environment, numerous arts and cultural events, one of the state's lowest crime rates, and a variety of outdoor opportunities and historic attractions draw many to the region.
