Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, English, public relations or other relevant field and five years’ experience in philanthropy communications, institutional communications, or nonprofit communications, with a minimum of two years of that experience directing philanthropy strategies. Must have a strong portfolio of writing samples. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of brand/identity development, digital communications, effective graphic design, and the electronic/print communications production process
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills, as well as exceptional listening ability in order to clearly and strategically communicate institutional priorities and support major gift philanthropic efforts
Preferred Qualifications • Master’s Degree in marketing, communications, journalism, English, or public relations or related field
• Experience working in philanthropy communications in a complex medical or academic development setting
• 10 years professional experience, with 5-10 years of that experience relevant to desired position
• Management experience

Responsibilities The Director of Communications will plan, implement and oversee a strategic communications program to engage and steward individuals, foundations and corporations making major gifts to Augusta University priorities. The successful Director will act as a close partner to philanthropy officers, ensuring they have the marketing tools they need to cultivate, solicit, close, and steward major gift donors. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Act as the philanthropy communications leader by planning and implementing communications strategies to support major gift cultivation and solicitation and by ensuring messaging is consistent and on point throughout communications vehicles. Lead development of systems and related policies/procedures to ensure smooth and effective communications efforts;
  • Oversee philanthropy communications staff and develop and carefully monitor project timelines, ensuring that the necessary information is gathered, meetings are held, vetting takes place and design is completed, so that high-quality projects are delivered in an efficient and timely manner;
  • Develop proposals and proposal templates, cases for support, white papers, website content, videos, social media, and other communications as needed, with support from philanthropy communications staff and support the stewardship responsibilities of donor engagement and the philanthropy officers by assisting with gift announcements/celebrations and storytelling;
  • Serve as a trusted resource for philanthropy officers, assisting with their development of effective solicitation materials and communications strategies, and providing tools such as proposal templates, talking points, and other materials to advance gift conversations;
  • Collaborate with graphic designers on the design of proposals, publications, donor presentations and other materials and oversee Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement website to ensure content is compelling and relevant;
  • Develop relationships and conduct conversations with leaders, scientists, clinicians, administrators, students, alumni and donors to support content development.
  • Write high-level communications, such as presidential and leadership remarks at special events and edit thewriting of colleagues and peers for style, grammar, content and messaging. Ensure and oversee communications support to Vice President for Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement;
  • Manage other communications projects and other related tasks/duties as assigned.
