Senior Director of Career and Community Education (SD)
DescriptionThe Senior Director of Career and Community Education (SD) will work directly with students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, donors, and community partners to oversee and continually improve the career education experience and the community engagement experience of Earlham students throughout the student cycle (from prospective students through alumni status). The SD will also oversee the Career Education (CEd) and Community Engagement (CEn) areas and supervise other employees in these units. The SD will also have other duties related to CEd and CEn involving some combination of: committee work, faculty/staff training or workshops, projects to improve campus climate for CEd and CEn through a campus-wide approach, implementing and/or managing technological solutions for the administration of CEd and CEn, and related tasks.Programmatic areas include: Bonner Scholars Program (to be sunsetted in 2023-24), Career Coaching, Career Education, Community Engagement, Community Engagement Leadership Scholars Program, Constituent Relations, Internship Programs, Richmond Residencies, and Student Employment.Primary Duties & ResponsibilitiesCEd and CEn Unit Administration (30%)1. Policy setting and management: Take the lead in setting, implementing, and maintaining student and staff policies related to CEd and CEn, including decision-making authority on creation and deployment of forms for student applications, application processes, and general workflows for assigned programmatic areas.Work in collaboration with the ED on any matters that interact with other College policies.Delegate substantial day-to-day portions of this authority to associate and assistant directors, as appropriate2. Departmental liaison work: Serve as primary CEd- and CEn-related liaison to Earlham academic departments and the Office of Institutional Advancement, working in collaboration with the ED and sometimes other EPIC personnel.3. Enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) with the College: Engage continuously through all activities as well as targeted activities to enhance the DEI environment of EarlhamEnsure access to opportunities and positive outcomes for students of all backgrounds and identities, including: first-generation students; international students; multilingual learners; nontraditional students; neurodiverse learners; Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC); LGBTQ+ students; students with accessibility needs; and many other demographics.Employ universal design in all programming areas to enhance access for all students.Ensure DEI in the employment experiences of all team members in the CEd and CEn areas, as well as ongoing DEI-related professional development for all team members.4. Budgetary management: Assume primary responsibility (with support from the ED, Administrative Assistant, and other CEd and CEn team members) for managing CEd- and CEn-related budgets, including operating budgets and restricted funds from grants and other outside donors.Work with the ED on any budgetary matters related to the central CGCE budget (e.g., travel/professional development, office supplies).Delegate day-to-day management of sub-budgets to team members, as appropriate.5. Program development: Create and implement strategic approaches to CEd and CEn programming. Take the lead in developing all new CEd and CEn programming, and work collaboratively with teaching faculty and other CGCE and EPIC personnel to develop both curricular and cocurricular touchpoints for these programs.Work with other team members to ensure that major events such as the Grad School Fair, the Career Fair, and the EPIC Expo are successful and well attended.6. Supervision: Supervise, mentor, and give continual feedback to direct reports and assist with supervision and mentorship of student workers.7. Constituent relationship management: Work with CEd and CEn team members to coordinate relationships with employers of all types, admission offices of graduate and professional schools, and organizations that may partner with Earlham for CEn experiences.Employ a strategic approach in cultivating and maintaining relationships that will benefit Earlham students in diverse academic and professional niche populations.Work with the ED and other EPIC Center directors to develop and maintain relationships that provide graduate-school pathway programs for Earlham students and ensure the visibility of these opportunities among students.8. Crisis response and risk management: Serve as a primary emergency/crisis contact person for students engaged in off-campus CEd and CEn activities (internships, career fairs, CEn placements, etc.).Collaborate with other CGCE directors, the ED, and other College personnel on matters related to risk management.Career Education (30%)9. Campus-wide program coordination: Coordinate a campus-wide (“career everywhere”) approach to CEd that includes various components targeted to students in different stages of their personal and professional development.Direct the overall program vision and direction of CEd at Earlham, including the funded internship programs (e.g. EPIC Advantage, Richmond Residencies, etc.).Coordinate the work of the CEd team members.Collaborate with academic departments and divisions and Institutional Advancement to build sector-based CEd resources and initiatives. Oversee the ongoing implementation of Career Communities, Affinity/Identity Communities, and the alumni/student mentorship platform.Develop and implement a communication plan for key constituency groups including prospective students and families, parents of current students, alumni, and donors.Assist faculty champions of CEd in promoting their programs and in implementing CEd more seamlessly into on-campus and online courses. Developing a strategic plan for enhancing the role of CEd in Earlham courses and helping to make courses with CEd components more visible to students.Teach (as needed and in consultation with the ED) courses that augment the CEd mission, via in-person and/or online formats.Community Engagement (20%)10. Campus-wide program coordination: Coordinate a campus-wide approach to CEn that includes various components targeted to students in different stages of their personal and professional development.Overall program vision and direction of CEn at Earlham, including the Community Engagement Leadership Scholars Program, other CEn programs and activities, and the Bonner Scholars Program (which will sunset after spring semester 2024, when the final cohort graduates).Coordinate the work of other CEn team members.Collaborate with academic departments and divisions and Institutional Advancement in building student-centered, career-discerning programming and opportunities in all areas of CEn.Collaborate with the Director of Off-Campus Study, the Director of International Student and Scholar Services, and other team members in Team Global in developing, operating, and promoting off-campus study opportunities that include CEn components as well as on-campus and Richmond-based opportunities targeted to international students and intended to help that cohort in their intercultural learning experiences while enrolled at Earlham.Develop and implement a communication plan for key constituency groups including prospective students and families, parents of current students, alumni, and donors.Assist faculty champions of CEn in promoting their programs and in implementing CEn more seamlessly into on-campus and online courses. Develop a strategic plan for enhancing the role of CEn in Earlham courses and helping to make courses with CEn components more visible to students.Teach (as needed and in consultation with the ED) courses that augment the CEn mission, via in-person and/or online formats.Contribute to Broader Institutional Mission (15%)11. EPIC and CGCE mission: Contribute to the overall mission of the CGCE and the EPIC programming model of the College.Participate in continuing development of liability, health and safety, and risk-management policies.Advance the mission of EPIC and CGCE in daily work and via special, assigned projects.Participate in campus-facing projects and programming that enhance CEd and CEn and a vocation- and avocation-discerning approach for all Earlham students; assist the ED in innovating in how CEd and CEn are delivered within the College.Assist the other members of the CGCE leadership team as available.12. Reporting: Take the lead in reporting on CEd and CEn activities and outcomes.Compile sections of any EPIC or CGCE newsletters or annual reports (and ad hoc reports) related to CEd and CEn.Develop, track, and promote graduate outcomes, working collaboratively with the Offices of Institutional Research and Institutional Advancement.13. Assessment: Collaborate with the ED, the AVP for Academic Affairs, the EPIC Center Directors, and other colleagues in designing, implementing, and administering ongoing assessment of student learning and outcomes in the CEd and CEn areas.Track and evaluate the effectiveness of all CEd- and CEn-related initiatives, programs, workshops, and events.Ensure the success of the annual First Destinations Survey and the dissemination of information from this assessment.Other Duties (5%)14. Professional development: Participate regularly in regional, national, or international professional-development opportunities and networks.15. Board/committee service: Serve on various boards and committees, as appropriate to the CEd, CEn, CGCE, and EPIC missions.16.
