Department Description:

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1975, is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.

The Mammalian Genotyping Core (MGC) is a component of the Integrated Genomics Cores along with the High Throughput Sequencing Facility (HTSF) and Functional Genomics Core (FGC) at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. The Mammalian Genotyping Core (MGC) mission is to support population, basic, clinical, and translational research by providing centralized cost-efficient, high quality genotyping and methylation services. The MGC provides services using Illumina BeadArray and Infinium microarray assay technologies for Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) Genotyping, Copy Number Variant (CNV), Loss of Heterozygosity (LOH), Insertions-Deletion (indel), Structural Variant, and DNA Methylation Analysis. Any Illumina microarrays can be supported.

Position Description:

THIS IS A TIME-LIMITED POSITION WITH AN ESTIMATED DURATION OF UP TO 3 YEARS.

This Research Specialist position is within a core facility. Responsibilities include: performing genotyping on customer samples; following written protocols to process samples using Illumina BeadArray and/or Life Technologies Taqman systems to produce high quality results in a timely manner; managing lab operations; placing orders; ensuring all necessary equipment, reagents, and supplies are available to complete given projects; managing inventory; maintaining equipment; managing projects; keeping track of progress of projects in LIMS; coordinating multiple and concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project; serving as an expert in conducting specialized techniques and procedures; and learning and/or developing new techniques and procedures to promote lab efficiency and/or setup new services. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Hands-on experiences with molecular biology techniques, PCR, or microarray based genotyping are required. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Competence with Microsoft operating system and Microsoft Office (Word/PowerPoint/Excel).

Preferred Qualifications:

Highly self-motivated, organized and responsible individual to serve as research specialist for a service oriented core facility. Experience with laboratory automation system, Illumina BeadArray technology, and large scale projects are preferred. Forensic training and background with quality control and quality assurance skills will be followed. Accuracy and attention to detail. Positive team working attitude. Excellent computer skills.
