Director, Fiscal Affairs and Facilities

The Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI), one of 51 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country, builds synergies and collaborations across Stanford Medicine in support of cancer research. A prominent, dynamic, growing and complex Institute in the Stanford School of Medicine (SOM), the mission-driven SCI has a growing workforce of over 340 non-academic and academic staff.

The Director for Fiscal Affairs and Facilities (Director for FAF) is responsible for the SCI's broad financial management and fiscal health, integrity and success of SCI financial operations, faculty compensation management, administration and planning for all SCI space, and stewarding resources. The Director for FAF reports to the SCI Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) and provides critical administrative leadership throughout the SCI. The Director for FAF serves as one of the senior administrative leaders for both the SCI as an Institute within the SOM and for management of the SCI's NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG), the grant responsible for the SCI's esteemed NCI-designation. The Director for FAF is responsible for successful management of all finance functions including fund accounting and management, research contract and grants administration, execution of the SCI's extensive pilot grant programs, development of faculty recruitment packages, coordination of philanthropic gifts and funds with Medical Center Development, faculty/postdoctoral affairs, facilities, space and property administration. The Director for FAF is a highly-advanced critical thinker who conducts strategic evaluations using complex, comprehensive analyses, and high level financial modeling. The Director leads a remote team of financial, research, accounting and administrative professionals and is an exemplar and champion of lean management. Possessing outstanding interpersonal, communication and faculty/physician relations skills, the Director of FAF consistently interacts with all members of Stanford Medicine in ways that encourage diverse perspectives, respect, cooperation and effective problem solving. The Director for FAF represents the SCI andthe SCI DFA in myriad financial matters across Stanford Medicine and establishes strong working relationships with SCI leadership, SCI-CCTO, SOM Fiscal Affairs, SOM Departments/Divisions including DFAs and Division Managers, SOM faculty, SOM Office of Sponsored Research, SOM Research Management Group, Medical Center Development, Research Compliance Office, cancer and financial leaders from within Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children's Health, and many others.

Duties include:

  • Manage the work of other employees, make hiring decisions, provide coaching, training and mentoring, manage performance, determine staffing needs, develop and ensure succession planning within area of responsibility.
  • Establish operational objectives and assignments, plan, direct and monitor all budgets for areas of responsibility, manage business operation and administration of several functional areas, may manage a team in providing post award sponsored research administration and services.
  • Identify and resolve unique problems of substantial significance that affect the overall functional area, beyond the immediate unit.
  • Manage organization's financial activities and structure; develop system and procedure requirements to support the financial reporting for the organization.
  • Contribute to designing, developing and delivering complex policies and procedures with both short and long term impact.
  • Collaborate with other colleagues on school/ unit projects; design and execute an effective system of internal controls for areas of responsibility; establish operational objectives to support the university's stewardship of resources.
  • Engage in continuous critical analysis of existing systems and processes; identify need for new systems, and develop and present proposals.
  • Lead complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects; develop, implement, and participate in major initiatives.
  • Represent the units/school within the functional units or school and to external constituencies.

  • Demonstrates a leadership style that builds and maintains a climate of trust and inspires commitment from others to achieve organization goals. Remains professional/calm under pressure.
  • Exceptional physician relations skills.
  • Confident, organized, self-motivated problem solver.
  • Prior Stanford Medicine experience with a knowledge of Stanford's financial systems


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Master's degree and six years relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle or other business financial systems
  • Advanced understanding of financial principles.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with previous experience managing people, delegating workload and providing direction/corrections as necessary.
  • Knowledge of property management requirements related to Stanford or non-Stanford title of equipment and fabrications.
  • Demonstrated competency in project management of a high volume of work, some of which is cyclical.
  • If managing sponsored projects, ability to manage post and pre award administration for sponsored projects within his/her unit. Knowledge and fluency of governmental regulations and Cardinal Curriculum level I and II.
  • Knowledge of procurement needs, including sole-sourcing, cost analyses, vendor requirements, and small business reporting.
  • Experience working successfully with PIs, their administrative staff, the office of sponsored research and external sponsors.
  • Demonstrated success in performing meticulous, high quality and compliant work.
  • Ability to interpret complex research and fiscal policies, assimilate information from a wide range of resources and act like a mentor and resource to others.
