Position Summary:

The Communications Director is a skilled strategist, catalyst, and content producer who advances the interests of MIIS and Middlebury by positioning the Institute and its people as important contributors to the teaching, research, and engagement of issues in international studies. The Communications Director has an impressive track record advising senior leadership on the breadth of communications relevant to an ambitious institution; has brought visibility and third-party validation to organizations by proactive media outreach; is experienced in the nuances of internal communications; has helped organizations navigate crises, emergencies, and less acute difficulties; is a superb and prolific writer and editor across genres, including storytelling; understands how to advance and differentiate brand in a crowded market; appreciates the specialized work of marketing and creative teams; and is a trusted colleague in a MIIS and Middlebury ecosystem that includes the academy; enrollment management; student affairs; alumni relations and development; finance; Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; the Communications and Marketing Department; and others—all working seamlessly to advance the Institute’s wellbeing.

Essential Functions:

Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
•Develop and manage effective media plans working with MIIS leadership, the vice president for communications and marketing, and other colleagues as necessary
•Develop and manage effective internal communications plans working with MIIS leadership, the vice president for communications and marketing, and other colleagues as necessary
•Develop and manage effective crisis communications plans working closely with MIIS leadership, the vice president for communications and marketing, and other colleagues as necessary
•Serve as MIIS’s primary spokesperson
•Develop and sustain productive relations with local, regional, national, and international press organizations and journalists in both horizontal and vertical media
•Research and write briefing materials, holding statements, talking points, press releases, and letters to the community
•Research and write executive-level communications as needed, including speeches, remarks, op-eds, and other statements to the community or the public
•Working closely with Vermont-based colleagues who can provide support, manage MIIS’s social media platforms
•Working closely with Vermont-based colleagues and others, create or adapt MIIS-related stories for Institute as well as institution-wide publications
•Collaborate as a trusted colleague with all MIIS stakeholders, especially those in admissions; the academy; marketing; Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; alum relations and development
•Collaborate with the Vermont-based creative, public affairs, and editorial teams who are full partners in supporting MIIS initiatives
•Serve as community relations point person
•Collaborate with colleagues across the Institute campus to ensure that internal and external communication and messaging are cogent and coherent and align with mission
•Manage the Institute broadcast studio and provide media training as required
•Supervise work of graduate assistants
•Handle other duties as assigned

Education:

•Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public affairs, or related fields or equivalent experience. Five-plus years of experience preferred in media relations, crisis communications, internal communications, and storytelling in a complex organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•A solid understanding of higher education communications and marketing, especially as it applies to graduate education (experience in international studies a plus)
•A global perspective and an entrepreneurial bent to seize opportunities, as well as be proactive in identifying trends and future opportunities
•Imagination and resourcefulness
•Outstanding management and planning skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects effectively in a collaborative environment
•Excellent analytical skills
•Superb writing skills
•Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
•Experience working in a matrixed organization and collaborating with teams and individuals that are dispersed geographically and that report to different individuals
•Value diversity and talent and inspire and motivate teams to work together with a clear direction and purpose
•Experience with a variety of online communications tools, including the website, CMS, project-management software, social media applications, broadcast email platforms
•A willingness to learn new strategies and tactics for excelling in the job
•Ability to function effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines while exercising initiative, good judgment, creativity, and diplomacy

Experience:

Five-plus years of experience preferred in media relations, crisis communications, internal communications, and storytelling in a complex organization.

Physical Demands:

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey maintains a smoke-free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and Drug-Free Workplace Act.

Position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
