The UGA Libraries is located on the University of Georgia’s main campus in Athens, Georgia. Its facilities include the Main Library, Science Library, Zell B. Miller Learning Center, Map and Government Information Library, Richard B. Russell Special Collections Libraries, Health Science Carnegie Library, and Repository, which receive more than three million visits per year and provide a vast array of electronic and print resources. They offer extensive hours, including 24/7 operation at the Miller Learning Center. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment preferred;

Position Summary:

The Circulation/Reserves Desk Assistant is responsible to the Public Services/Reserves Coordinator for performing public service duties and a variety of clerical routines in order to maintain the integrity of the Libraries’ collection. The Assistant serves library patrons in accessing the collection by attending a public service desk, processing materials, and by maintaining accurate records. The Assistant also performs specialized circulation services at the circulation desk and circulation office desk, including removing student registration flags, issuing borrowers’ cards, and interpreting policies, rules, and regulations. The Circulation/Reserves Desk Assistant opens the department on week day mornings. Work is performed under general supervision following established practices and procedures.

Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons;

Ability to perform clerical tasks accurately with close attention to detail;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;

Effective oral and written communication skills;

Experience processing cash receipts, checks and credit cards.

Understanding of the value of diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace and particularly in regard to the delivery of information resources.

Creates reserve lists using GIL and eLC by corresponding with instructors, retrieving requested materials, creating temporary bibliographic records for personal items and digitizing portions of materials.

Assists patrons at the Circulation desk with specialized access services by circulating materials, updating online records, collecting fines providing information on the status of items in the collection, and searching for items.

Maintains course reserve lists using GIL and eLC by reconciling new lists, removing materials at the end of term, returning removed materials to instructors and/or permanent locations, and performing inventory of the reserves shelves.

Works in the Circulation Office performing specialized circulation services by issuing borrowers’ cards, placing and clearing student registration flags, answering inquiries concerning library obligations and access to library electronic resources, and by interpreting policies, rules, and regulations independently at the Circulation Office desk and phones.

Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via GRAPEVINE (the Libraries’ listserv) and other communication tools, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.

Oversees the public service desks on assigned evenings or weekends by supervising student assistants performing general circulation duties and managing unusual problems as they arise.
