Manage complex accounting and control functions for a unit, school or function, which may include financial reporting, compliance, development of automated systems such as the current worldwide implementation of Oracle Fusion, and review and approval of complex transactions.

The Sr. Associate Director, Global Finance will lead the Redwood City - based finance/accounting operations team within the Global Business Services department of Financial Management Services. The role will report to the Director, Global Finance Operations, and have management responsibility for international accounting and tax functions for Stanford’s growing legal entity footprint. This is a hands-on accounting role requiring experience in international accounting, financial reporting, operations and systems. The Sr. Associate Director, Global Finance will work closely and collaboratively with the client-facing consulting and risk identification/assessment/management function within the Global Business Services team.


  • Identify and resolve unique issues of substantial significance that affect the functioning beyond the immediate unit. Establish operational objectives and assignments and program and project goals.
    • Collaborate with program employees and management (both in countries and in California) on day-to-day financial, tax and accounting operations of each entity within Stanford’s global footprint.
    • Support the provision of University-wide leadership and oversight for global financial issues, including implementation of a SAAS-based global consolidation system (Oracle Cloud).
  • Develop and deliver both short and long term complex analyses and high level strategic modeling.
    • Support the development of a costing model for global support services to be utilized as an indirect cost burden rate for global activities
  • Plan, direct, and monitor all budgets for areas of responsibility. Manage business operation and administration of several functional areas.
    • Partner closely with key business partners in: Treasury, GlobalHR, OGC, IT, OOD, ORA
    • Monitor GBS Operations budget, in particular use of external consulting resources. Collaborate with the Controller’s Office to ensure that university auditor fees are estimated and presented to the Board of Trustees for approval.
  • Manage organization's accounting activities and structure; develop system and procedure requirements to support the reporting for the organization.
    • Develop and support management reporting for global programs through the in-process Oracle Cloud GL implementation
    • Develop regular reporting packages for governance review purposes
    • Drive continuous critical analysis of existing systems and processes; identify need for new systems; develop and present proposals; execute on approved
  • Design and execute an effective system of internal controls for areas of responsibility; establish operational objectives to ensure controls are working.
    • New processes and systems are being implemented by GBS, in partnership with campus clients, across the University’s legal entities, requiring that controls be identified, documented and periodically assessed.
  • Create and execute programs, processes, and policies to support the university's stewardship of resources.
  • Support foreign entities governance by ensuring board meetings are regularly scheduled and include all relevant resolutions the board must discuss and approve. Support drafting of minutes for circulation to board members.
  • Make recommendations and negotiate and influence issues related to university accounting policy for global entities; provide strategy, vision, and direction with wide scope and Impact for global operations
  • Oversee development and delivery of education and outreach meetings related to global operations. Represent university to external organizations for providing solutions to complex problems that may have organizational impact.
  • Drive continuous critical analysis of existing systems and processes; identify need for new systems; develop and present proposals.
    • Refine and manage compliance calendars for each company within Stanford’s global footprint
    • Refine and manage legal entity repository
    • Together with key stakeholders, refine and implement policy, procedure and internal control frameworks for in-country global operations.
  • Act as business owner on major initiatives; lead complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects; develop and implement initiatives.
    • Add-GCS and in-country software implementations, with associated process changes
  • Manage the work of other employees, and determine staffing needs. Make hiring decisions, provide coaching, training, and mentoring, and manage performance.

  • Master's degree or Certified Public Accountant/Chartered Accountant and at least six years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Public accounting experience: Big 4 preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications, such as Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply, interpret, and implement GAAP.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply IFRS reporting standards. Experience with preparation of IFRS-based financial statements.
  • Knowledge and understanding of accounting systems, including experience in implementing accounting systems for global use.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply international tax principles.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills, ability to manage a diverse team with cultural sensitivity
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Advanced analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft and Google applications as well as familiarity with Slack, Zoom or other collaboration/communication tools.
  • International working experience?
  • Certifications and Licenses: CPA, ACCA


  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
