Northwestern University, The Program in Global Health Studies invites applications for a full-time three-year appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor in environment and health starting September 1st, 2021. This is a non-tenure track, full-time, benefits eligible position. We are especially interested in candidates with a strong record of or potential for teaching excellence and pedagogical creativity. A Ph.D. in a social science, interdisciplinary, or public health-related field is required by the time the appointment begins. We seek applicants whose expertise focuses on intersections of environment and human health. Geographic region is open. Candidates whose work addresses environmental determinants of health inequalities relating to race and/or gender are especially invited to apply.

The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching six undergraduate classes per year (two per quarter), with TA/grader support for larger classes. In addition to developing new courses based on their expertise, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the growing and collegial program in Global Health Studies, including teaching at least one (and preferably more) of the required core courses (e.g., Introduction to International Public Health, Social Determinants of Health, Global Bioethics, Research Methods, History of Global Health or History of Biomedicine). Research is not an expectation of this position.

Applicants should submit (1) a cover letter outlining how the candidate could contribute to teaching and would further diversify and complement existing strengths of the Program; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) evidence of teaching effectiveness (please include teaching philosophy, teaching statement, two sample syllabi, student evaluations if available); (4) an optional diversity letter outlining how the applicant contributes to diverse excellence, or other evidence about teaching and/or training diverse student populations; and (5) names/addresses of 3 references. Letters will not be requested upfront, but the Committee may reach out for references after applications have been reviewed. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed via video conferencing.
