Under the general supervision of the Division Dean, the Maternity and Women’s Health Nursing instructor’s responsibilities include teaching Maternity, Women’s Health and general nursing content in the nursing program. The instructor will be responsible for the Maternity and Women’s Health curriculum and collaborating with the program/college in meeting accreditation standards. The responsibility of the instructor will be to teach the lecture, skills lab, clinical, high fidelity simulation and community opportunities within the specialty and within general nursing courses.

The instructor is expected to incorporate innovative teaching and learning methodologies that includes technology. Participation as a full-time faculty member in program, division and campus-wide activities is required and may include managing students in volunteering activities, engaging with community partners, outreach to new and existing clinical partners, overseeing nursing students in campus wide and community events, mentoring students in club activities, and mentoring new faculty.

Even though the nursing program is face-to-face only, the instructor is required to have or acquire online competencies related to hybrid/online instruction. The teaching assignment may include evening and/or weekends with partnering clinical facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.Teach assigned courses in the Nursing program, and employ learner-centered instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter.

2.Understand the importance of holding oneself accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices.
3.Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.

4.Initiate and enhance institutional and teaching practices and aim to create a culturally responsive and equity driven teaching environment.

5.Teach Maternity, Women’s Health and Nursing in accordance with post-secondary level established course outlines.

6.Implement and collaborate with nursing faculty and the program in meeting Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) standards.

7.Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.

8.Develop and act as a Faculty Advisor for campus wide “Civic Engagement Club or Association” or clubs within the Health Sciences Division.

9.Assist students with their assignments by holding required office hours and attend program/division meetings.

10.Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.

11.Develop effective online course materials, and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 §55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.

12.Participate in the leadership of discipline specific learning communities.

13.Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).

14.Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum as well as assess student-learning outcomes at the course and program levels.

15.Establish and maintain relationships with new and existing clinical sites.

16.Explore outreach opportunities that serve a wider range of pre-/post-RN students

17.Meet with didactic and clinical faculty members to discuss program development.

18.Support the Nursing Program Director in accreditation requirements, program improvement, and curriculum development.

19.Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.

20.Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.

21.Oversee student volunteering activities and participate in community outreach programs such as Science Night, Flu and/or Covid Vaccination Clinics, Scholarship Partner Dinners and Nursing Week Celebration and other activities to be developed.

22.Participate in Campus Student Award Presentations.

23.Participate in Bi-Annual Nursing Graduation Pinning and yearly College Graduation Ceremony.

24.Encourage positive race-consciousness and embrace human difference.
25.Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.

26.Create and equity based and welcoming classroom environment.

27.Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the program and college.

28.Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the United Faculty of Ohlone (faculty bargaining unit) contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, online via the eCampus, and/or other designated locations.

29.Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

•Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited college/university, which includes course work in field of study, with preparation for teaching clinical nursing as related to this job description. Equivalencies considered as approved by the Board of Registered Nursing.

•Completion of at least one-year experience teaching courses related to nursing OR a course which includes Practice in Teaching Nursing. (Submit official course description to verify course content or documented equivalent experience.)
•Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the Maternal Child Health/Obstetrics nursing which can be met by:
(A) One-year continuous, full-time, or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in obstetric/women’s health nursing OR
(B) One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency
•A current, valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California, or eligibility for license, and BRN faculty approval

Desirable Qualifications:

1.Teaching experience in registered nursing at the post-secondary level.
2.Courses in Nursing Education at a Master’s Level and/or Certified Nurse Educator from NLN.
3.Familiarity with Pedagogy in Nursing Education.
4.Advanced Certification in Obstetrics, Women’s Health or related to nursing specialty.
5.Experience in using innovative teaching methods that encourage student engagement and learning.
6.Experience creating socially conscious syllabi, equitable classroom materials and inclusive pedagogical practices to promote an inclusive environment.
7.Evidence of a willingness to develop new knowledge and clinical skills as required by a dynamic curriculum, which is highly responsive to a rapidly changing and demanding health care job market.
8.Demonstration of a pattern of participation in registered nursing professional growth activities.
9.Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students; and a commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.
10.Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
11.Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
12.Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
13.Demonstrate ability to work at a level beyond the minimum requirements including serving on program and college committees.

This is a regular probationary, tenure track, faculty position commencing Fall Semester 2021. The appointee would be expected to work 40 hours per week. The work year is 175 days. More information is available in the faculty contract at the following link:

Sick Leave: One day per month, accumulating indefinitely, if unused. All other Education Code leave benefits apply.
Sabbatical Leave: After 6 consecutive years of employment with the district you will be eligible for sabbatical leave. You will receive 100% pay for one semester leave and 70%for an academic year.
Enrollment Fee Waiver: Employees and their qualified dependents receive enrollment fee waiver for courses taken at Ohlone College.
Certificated employees belong to the United Faculty of Ohlone (UFO).
