Job Description

The Senior Research Analyst in Institutional Research and Analytics, this position is responsible for supporting the office of Institutional Research's reporting, analytic, and data visualization efforts to assure quality programs and services.

This is a grant-funded position. Grant funded positions are term-limited and are contingent upon sufficient grant funding.


Responsibilities:

  • Primary duties include eliciting user requirements and interpreting and translating these requirements into specifications to properly execute extracts, tables, reports, and analyses using SQL (Structured Query Language) or other appropriate programming languages; documenting all project processes, sources, and techniques to ensure consistent application of methodology in future projects; anticipating and representing end-user needs; proposing analytic reports to answer strategic, tactical, structured or unstructured business questions.

  • Works independently using standard Institutional Research methods to develop reports/analytics from survey documentation and instructions in response to various external survey requests, Public Information Requests, and internal/external grant requests.

  • Extracts, translates, and analyzes data; prepares statistical reports and visualizations; and, interprets results using appropriate statistical analytic methods, standard Institutional Research practices, and software tools.

  • Works directly with staff and administration to assist in developing data visualizations and business intelligence tools such as Cognos, MS Excel, Business Objects, and Tableau.

  • Works with both internal and external data/report requestors in order to respond to and support internal research requests from faculty, staff, and students. Collects, verifies, analyzes, and presents statistical data and visualizations in response to external requests.

  • Compiles, maintains, and secures institutional databases and datasets, download data from institutional resources (Banner PROD and ODS, COGNOS, Access, and others) as well as external data sources such as IPEDS, NSC, THECB, etc. Extracts, merges, translates, validates, and identifies and resolves data quality issues.

  • Prepares data for analyses and reporting.

  • Represents the Office of Institutional Research on committees, participates in state/county/city community research workgroups and partnerships, and provides training and technical support for faculty and staff.

  • Works both under the supervision of the Director of Institutional Research and independently to collect data, coordinate between supporting parties, resolve data anomalies and errors, complete survey instruments, and communicate with mandatory reporting entities such as NCES IPEDS, THECB, LBB, LAR, and TAMU-System.

  • Compiles and analyzes data, performs data visualization, and publishes University Fact Book.

  • Manages the University's SRI process, to include project deployment, provides assistance to students and faculty, and provides support for SRI reporting.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.

  • Two years of related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Social Sciences, or related field with emphasis on database management.

  • Two years' experience in at least two of the following three areas: SQL programming, Ellucian Banner, creating Tableau visualizations


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Knowledge of methods and equipment used in electronic data processing, including system analyses, design, and computer programming techniques.

  • Excellent customer services and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work in a team environment. Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of developing data requirements and operationalizing these into report and analytic specifications. Proficiency with Excel, Access, SQL Server, Oracle SQL, SPSS, Tableau, Cognos, BusinessObjects, and Banner PROD and ODS.

  • Knowledge of Institutional Research methods, terminology, practices, and procedures.

  • Ability to multitask and work both independently and cooperatively with others.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
