Job Summary

The University of North Georgia University College deparment is currently accepting applications for 2021-22 Nighthawk Navigator student peer coaches on the Gainesville campus. Success coaching involves assisting students in identifying and understanding any obstacles they might have relative to academic performance, then guiding them in developing strategies and accessing support services to accomplish their goals. Nighthawk Navigator peer coaches will assist professional Academic Success Coaches in this endeavor.

Position begins June 2021 with periodic training activities scheduled into July. Regular duties begin with outreach to new students when training is complete.

Responsibilities
  • In conjunction with UNG's Academic Success Coaches, provide instruction in specific learning skills and strategies, assist students in identifying and accessing academic resources on campus, and act as accountability partners for first-year students.
  • Host group and individual coaching sessions in person and/or virtually, observing current institutional protocols.
  • Participate in the development and dissemination of information promoting academic success strategies and resources, as well as information important to first-year students related to university deadlines, procedures, and requirements.
  • Interact with students in specific courses, as coordinated with the faculty, in order to facilitate connection to first-year relevant information.
  • Serve as a referral agent between students and faculty, tutors, professional academic success coaches, or other student success personnel, to enhance student learning and persistence.
  • Monitor and maintain data on student participation in peer coaching and first-year experience activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must be a strong communicator, both verbally and in writing, and demonstrate active listening skills.
  • Must know and practice skills associated with academic success, including good organization and time management, effective study strategies, and knowledge of academic resources.
  • Must understand and comply with the need to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be able to demonstrate patience and empathy with students' academic challenges.
  • Availability for both self-guided and in-person training during the summer months is important, and will be arranged with consideration to the schedules of the individuals who are hired.
Required Qualifications
  • Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the end of the Summer '21, and be enrolled as a current student in a minimum of 6 credit hours for Fall '21.
  • Must be in good academic standing with the university and must hold and maintain a minimum 3.00 GPA.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior mentoring, tutoring or instructional experiences a plus.
