Job Details
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute of Genome Sciences is currently recruiting for a Core Laboratory Specialist. This position is responsible for conducting production molecular biology applications relevant to the study of the microbiota of varied systems and across multiple projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in the independent conduct of microbial/microbiome system research, protocol development and testing, and project management.UMB offers a generous benefits package that includes 22 vacation days, 14 floating and holidays, 15 sick days; comprehensive health insurance and retirement options; and tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any of the University System of Maryland schools.Essential Functions:
- Provide leadership and oversight of internal projects to ensure proper planning, execution, and completion of microbiome-related research.
- Engage researchers and clients in support of addressing questions or concerns, project logistics, delivery of data, and analysis products.
- Independently develop and validate new laboratory research methods in the areas of nucleic acid purification, next-generation library preparation, library and sample QC, and analysis.
- Perform library preparation for metagenome, metatranscriptome, genome, and amplicon next-generation sequencing projects for difficult, high-risk microbiome studies.
- Operate multiple types of liquid handling and laboratory automation platforms.
- Maintain thorough documentation for all work performed across all projects and provide full accounting and verification records for different clients and projects.
- Compile and analyze research data using MS Excel, Hamilton VENUS, MSL LIMS, and internal analysis scripting.
- May perform supervisory duties including training and guiding laboratory staff; assisting in developing policies, procedures, and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and risk assessment & management.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory.Experience: Three (3) years laboratory experience including two (2) years in microbial/microbiome research specializationOther: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials, and/or ionizing radiation. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently. Ability to troubleshoot base programming and implement improvements.
