Health Careers Graduate and Professional Programs Coordinator

Job Summary:

The Pre-Health Advisor and Communications Specialist reports directly to the Director of Health Careers and will provide student support to pre-health science students and manage applications and communications with all accepted students and alumnae.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

•Develops and presents workshops, conduct interviews, and compose committee letters for professional schools;
•Develops recommendation packets for alumnae or non-health council students for entrance into health professional schools;
•Participates in Spelman College recruitment events and meetings with prospective students;
•Attends various meetings regarding general advising;
•Works with the Health Careers Director and Health Council faculty members to report updates in admission requirement and pre-requisites for health professional schools to students, faculty and other stake holders in the Spelman community;
•Collaborates with the Office of Admissions to manage applications and communications with accepted students;
•Tracks outcomes of students at undergraduate and professional school levels;
•Works collaboratively with the Director on information sessions and workshops coordinated by Health Sciences Office;
•Develops annual reports on admissions, activities, and acceptances of students during each application cycle;

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree plus a minimum of two years of related experience in a higher education setting is required.

This position requires excellent oral communication and presentation skills when providing information and responding to questions from students, parents, employees and the general public in one-on-one or group situations. Excellent writing skills are also required for preparing various forms of business correspondence, e.g. letters, reports, emails. Also, must be able to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Good proofreading skills are essential.
This position requires a strong customer service focus, communication, and time management skills. Professional demeanor with the ability to interface with internal and external customers with diplomacy and tact is essential. Independent judgment is necessary to plan, prioritize and organize a diversified workload with attention to detail. Work requires fact-finding and compilation skills plus ability to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously, at times with little supervision. Must possess intermediate to advanced skills in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point and Access) to generate letters, spreadsheets, graphs, reports and Power Point presentations.

Preferred Qualifications:

It is preferred that the applicant have experience in composing comprehensive committee letters for graduate and professional schools.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit, use hands to handle office supplies, operate computer and other office equipment, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to: reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to: stand, walk, stoop, climb, taste and smell, and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
