JOB SUMMARY: This position provides assistance to the Executive Director of Human Resources and manages a variety of duties related to the University’s human resource functions.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Assists with writing and placing external job ads.
  • Keeps job descriptions up-to-date, accurate and compliant with relevant federal, state and local laws.
  • Assist with creating offer letters.
  • Plans and conducts new employee orientation for Macon and Warner Robins campuses.
  • Serves as the Tuition Assistance Program Coordinator; reviews and processes applications.
  • Provides data and reports as needed.
  • Assist the Executive Director of Human Resources with various projects.
  • Responds to and resolves questions regarding benefit and policy issues from employees and retirees.
  • Serves as the USG Well-Being liaison.
  • Assists with the facilitation of University-wide events.
  • Recommends appropriate resolution of employee relations issues.
  • Coordinates and assists with the delivery of employee training.
  • Performs related duties and assists others in the department as needed.
  • Participates in wage surveys.
  • While the home campus for this position is in Macon, periodic travel to all campuses is required.
  • Coordinates annual benefits open enrollment processes and meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of human resources management principles.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws related to employment and benefits.
  • Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
  • Skill in decision-making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Executive Director of Human Resources assigns work in terms of very general instructions and spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include state and federal laws along with the University System of Georgia and MGA policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgement, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of varied duties in support of the University’s human resources functions. The necessity of responding to the day-to-day or immediate needs of personnel contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide support for the human resource functions of Middle Georgia State University. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of department operations.

CONTACTS:

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, faculty, staff, retirees, job applicants, other University System human resources staff, peers at other institutions, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems and to provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises the Human Resources Specialist and the Human Resources Generalist.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with having had a similar position for three years.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal employment laws.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Hands-on experience with a Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
  • Experience with creating a culture of engagement, collaboration and teamwork.
  • Ability to ready, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquires or complaints.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of University System of Georgia policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft HRIS system a plus.
  • Higher Education experience.
  • Supervisory experience.

COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION:

  • Position is exempt (monthly paid).
  • Pay Grade 19.
