The School of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) has 38 academic faculty, 30 research faculty and post-docs, approximately 100 visiting scholars and Tech Temps, and 21 administrative and technical staff. The School is housed in five buildings and expected to grow in the next few years. To learn more about MSE, visit: www.mse.gatech.eduJob Summary A Postdoctoral Fellow position is immediately available in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech to work on manufacturing carbon fiber and to study the fiber matrix interface. The focus of carbon fiber manufacturing is to make high strength high modulus carbon fibers, as well as to manufacture low cost carbon fibers. Carbon fibers are being manufactured from polyacrylonitrile precursors, as well as other low cost precursors such as asphaltene and lignin. Low energy consuming carbon fibers, e.g. via Joule heating, are also of interest. Tailoring the interphase in carbon nanotube yarn and BMI and epoxy resins is also required. Postdoctoral scholars will have access to state-of-the-art fiber manufacturing and pyrolysis laboratory located in class 1000 cleanrooms. Central facilities including the Materials Characterization Facility provide a vast array of instrumentation resources. Required Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have a PhD or doctoral degree in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline.Preferred Qualifications
- Ideal candidates will have experience in combinations of the following areas: polymer synthesis, polymer solution processing, structure, and properties.
- Structural characterization by X-ray diffraction, DSC, TGA, DMA, XPS, FTIR, NMR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM will be needed as well as experience in polymer rheology and mechanical testing. Individual should be motivated to work in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment.
