The University of Virginia seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and experienced fundraising professional to fill the role of Director of Development, University Priorities. Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Director of Development, University Priorities will generate philanthropic support for need-based scholarships and other fundraising priorities for the University as part of the Honor the Future campaign. With the University’s commitment to meeting 100 percent of a student’s demonstrated financial need, fundraising for need-based scholarships is more vital than ever. The University has recently made significant investments in need-based scholarships through matching programs for the Bicentennial Scholars Fund, Blue Ridge Scholars program, and University Achievement Awards. Fundraising in support of these initiatives will broaden access to the University and is central to the goals laid out in President Ryan’s 2030 strategic vision for the University to recruit and support exceptionally talented, diverse, and service-oriented students, regardless of their economic circumstances.
Build and manage a portfolio of current and prospective major-gift level donors ($100K+) and move them towards giving levels that achieve annual and long-range fundraising goals of the University.
Oversee fundraising efforts for need-based scholarships.
Create personalized strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals within his/her portfolio.
Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to include special events, communications, annual campaigns, and major gift strategies in support of need-based scholarships at the University.
When permitted, travel nationally to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects for DEI giving opportunities.
Collaborate with other fundraisers in the department and across the University in overall relationship building of alumni, parents and friends to ensure a coordinated approach for prospects and donors and to develop and implement cultivation and solicitation plans.
Direct and advise other University Priorities staff.
Bachelor’s Degree with at least eight years of relevant experience.
Ability to frequently travel domestically with occasional evening and weekend work.
Valid Driver's License.
Prior experience in non-profit or higher education fundraising and staffing senior leaders and volunteers.
Demonstrated success in fundraising, sales or managing relationships with high-net-worth individuals.
Track record of demonstrating a high degree of initiative, flexibility and will have the skills to shape and be shaped by an evolving fundraising initiative.
Exceptional communication skills, a high degree of personal integrity and the ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the small details.
Experience using data to evaluate and plan.
