The University of Virginia seeks an Associate Director of Gift Planning. The Associate Director of Gift Planning will represent the University of Virginia, its programs, policies, personnel, traditions, philosophy, and objectives to all constituent groups. The primary focus of this position will be to cultivate relationships with individuals (alumni, family, and friends of the University of Virginia) to actively solicit future support, deferred, and major outright gifts to the University, its schools, and its programs.

The Associate Director will be responsible for managing a portfolio of planned gift prospects and developing a comprehensive solicitation and stewardship strategy for the portfolio and any assigned liaison relationships. The liaison role includes working closely with the assigned school or unit to provide Planned Gift prospect lists; to attend team/staff meetings, as appropriate and to coordinate efforts to increase planned gifts. Also, the liaison role provides educational and consulting services tailored to the school or unit’s unique program campaign goals. In addition, the Associate Director will identify, qualify and cultivate UVA planned gift prospects using prospect lists for virtual and in-person visits (when appropriate), emails, and phone calls. This position will also provide sample bequest language, basic and complex gift calculations as needed to actively solicit planned gifts from their portfolio and liaison relationships. In addition, this position requires an ability to travel on behalf of the University (when appropriate) and occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

• Develop prospect portfolios of potential individual donors, cultivating and soliciting planned gifts for up to $100,000+ . Cultivate relationships, assist in planning major outright and deferred gifts to the University.

• Work closely with donors' financial advisors and attorneys regarding structures of lifetime and testamentary plans to benefit the University.

• Serve as liaison to assigned schools or units to provide educational and consulting services tailored to the school or unit’s unique program campaign goals. Provide prospect lists and attend school/unit meetings, as appropriate, to coordinate efforts to increase planned gifts.

• Create and implement cultivation structures that include prospect strategies, development, and preparation of written materials, design and implementation of cultivation events, direct solicitation, and solicitation in tandem with volunteers and other staff.

• Build strong collaborative relationships with other development professionals at the University. Advise development officers across Grounds regarding tax consequences of charitable gifts.

• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree with experience in fundraising, finance, law or estate planning.

• Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with major gifts prospects, fundraising colleagues, academic leaders, faculty, alumni, and volunteers.

• Excellent oral and written communication.

• The ability to analyze and present clear information.

• The ability to work independently and as part of a team and understand and articulate the University's educational mission, strategic aims, and programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years of demonstrated success and experience in fundraising, planned giving or a related field.

• Experience as a financial planner, trust officer, or estate planning attorney .
