Job Description

One full time, 12-month, non-tenure track position is available. Position is based in Phoenix, AZ.

The College of Health and Human Services at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is seeking a full-time (12 month) faculty member at the rank of Assistant or Associate or Full Clinical Professor to assist the Program Director with the teaching and administration of a Physician Assistant Program in Phoenix, AZ. This Program provides a unique opportunity to teach in an inter-professional educational environment that includes Northern Arizona University doctoral programs in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy and the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. The program resides in the state-of-the-art Phoenix Biomedical Campus in downtown Phoenix shared by health science educational programs from both the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.

This individual will assume responsibility for the coordination of parts of the curriculum and associated evaluative processes. The successful candidate will ultimately assist with many aspects of the program including teaching, recruitment, admissions, student advising, program administration, and the development, delivery and evaluation of the curriculum associated with the program, as well as perform scholarship and service activity. The successful candidate will be involved with development and retention of clinical rotation sites, orchestration of students on clinical rotations, delivery and evaluation of the clinical curriculum, conducting both initial and ongoing site visits, mentoring and advising of clinical students. Additionally, this candidate will both lead and assist in the preparation of ARC-PA evaluations, reports, accreditation documents, and participate in periodic accreditation site visits to ensure that the program is in compliance with the ARC-PA Standards. Some didactic teaching responsibilities may be required as needed. Additional duties may include other aspects of the program including recruitment, student admissions, program administration as well as perform scholarship and service activity.


Minimum Qualifications

Assistant Clinical Professor

  • Master's degree
  • Graduate of an ARC-PA (or predecessor) accredited PA Program with current NCCPA certification
  • Eligibility for PA licensure in Arizona
  • Minimum of three years’ clinical experience as a licensed PA

Associate Clinical Professor (all the above, and)

  • A minimum of five years of clinical experience as a licensed PA
  • The equivalent of 6 years' full time experience as a faculty member in a PA program
  • Previous or current academic appointment at rank equivalent to associate clinical professor or higher

Full Clinical Professor (all of the above, and)

  • Previous or current academic appointment at rank equivalent to full clinical professor or higher

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 12 months of teaching experience in an accredited PA program. (cumulative time spent as adjunct faculty, part-time teaching faculty, and/or lecturing for a PA program will be considered)
  • Record of peer-reviewed scholarly activity, successful grant funding and management, and/or notable service to the profession
  • Experience as a clinical coordinator or director of clinical education at a PA program is highly desired
  • A working knowledge of the ARC-PA Standards
  • Potential for or a record of scholarship
  • A record of service in the PA profession at the state or national level
  • A record of successful teaching evidenced by student learning and success
  • Clinical experience working in primary care and/or with underserved populations
  • Doctoral degree or progress toward obtaining a doctoral degree
  • Experience in interprofessional education
  • Experience in the use of on-line course management and testing software for PA students
  • Experience working in an educational program that emphasizes diverse student populations

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment.

If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
