The history department at Kenyon College, a highly selective, nationally-ranked liberal arts college in central Ohio, invites applications for a two-year visiting assistant professorship, beginning July 1, 2021. We seek a historian whose research and teaching engages both Native-American history and African-American history. Candidates should be prepared to teach the two U.S. history survey courses (pre- and post-1877), as well as other surveys and intermediate and upper-level seminars on both Native-American and African-American topics. The history department maintains a strong honors program, and there are opportunities to mentor students in both fields.

The history department is comprised of a dozen historians with diverse thematic and geographic specializations, and values excellence in undergraduate education and high-quality research. Candidates should have a record of excellent teaching and a Ph.D. in hand or be near completion of the degree by the start of the appointment on July 1, 2021.

The application letter should discuss the candidate’s teaching experience —with specific examples of innovative assignments and approaches—as well as information on ways that issues and practices related to diversity, inclusion, and equity have been or will be included in teaching and advising. The letter should also present the candidate’s research agenda, including current and future projects. More materials (letters of recommendation, a writing sample, an unofficial transcript, and a statement of teaching philosophy) will be requested from candidates who advance to the interview stage. Compensation and Benefits

Salaries at Kenyon are competitive and are commensurate with experience. There are a number of faculty development opportunities (e.g. travel, research funds, etc.) for which appointees are eligible.
