Job Description:

Courses to be taught will include Introduction to Book Art (a studio course for undergraduates only, one section in the fall of 2021 and one section in the spring of 2022) and Creating Books/Creating Art: Artists' Books as Social practice (split level undergrad/grad the spring only) (see course descriptions below), plus participation in Book Art Concentration which consists of individual meetings with Book Art Graduate students.

The successful candidate will have a strong familiarity with letterpress printing, hand typesetting, traditional and contemporary binding structures and have broad knowledge of contemporary artist's books and zines as well as experience and/or knowledge of book art as social practice. They will be capable of teaching studio courses in the letterpress studio and the bindery as well as incorporating artist's book examples from Special Collections in the Mills library as a meaningful part of the curriculum.

Department: The Book Art Program offers a broad set of classes for both undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students can enroll in the MFA in Book Art. Undergraduate students can pursue a Book Art Minor or an individualized major. Students have access to a wide range of equipment in our studios, including Vandercook, platen and hand presses, an etching press, a polymer platemaker and a Risograph. The Book Art bindery has tools for hand bookbinding such as drymount presses, a Kwikprint, board shears, standing press and many nipping presses, sewing frames, etc. Papermaking is being added as a new part of the curriculum. The Book Art Program is housed in the department of Art and Visual Culture.

Course Descriptions:
Introduction to Book Art (undergrad only)

This course offers the beginning undergraduate student an introduction to the techniques, structures, tools, materials, and processes used in creating artists' books. Students will explore a broad range of studio practice, including letterpress printing, hand and computer typography, simple book structures, and basic relief printmaking as they examine the relationship of verbal, visual, and structural content in books. Students will complete group and individual projects.

This class meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 1-3:50pm.

Creating Books/Creating Art: Book Art as Social Practice ((split level undergrad/grad)
What does it mean to make books as art? How does social practice influence the content and form of artists' books? We will explore contemporary artists' books through the dynamic of social practice, with a focus on the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity and internationality. Students will create artists' books that reflect this study, and develop one or more exhibitions or performances that allow for public examination and critique.We will work extensively with artists' books from our library's Special Collections. Field trips, guest artists. This class meets Tuesdays 7:00-9:30.

Compensation: For faculty new to Mills, compensation is $6,500 per course with a terminal degree and $6,000 per course without a terminal degree. Adjunct compensation is governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement and increases with seniority at Mills College.


  • Candidates with experience in Risograph printing, alternative printmaking and/or other contemporary approaches to the book are encouraged to apply. Must have availability on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
  • MFA in Book Art preferred.
  • One or more years of classroom teaching experience preferred.

Additional Information:

This is an exempt, part-time position. The compensation includes state-mandated benefits including Health Insurance, Social Security, State Disability Insurance, Workers' Compensation Insurance, Unemployment Insurance and Sick Day accrual.
